Academia at its highest, for better or worse

      Pros

Amazing core facilities. Great benefits, especially for academia.

      Cons

Very privileged place that can be tone deaf at times. Heads of lab really run their own kingdoms and are not really subject to any real accountability so pick wisely.

      Positive experience in my lab

      Pros

Great benefits, smart community, great core facilities, nice housing close to the beautiful campus. Cool faculty club bar that serves free beer 3x a week. Experience will vary widely depending on your PI, but the university itself contributes positively to the experience.

      Cons

Collaboration is low between labs. Postdocs don't get paid a ton. Work life balance is more of a "work life blend".

      Pros

Nice people, great location, great benefits, great learning opportunities.

      Cons

PhDs and postdocs are pretty long. It is almost impossible to fast-track.

      Pros

You're in an environment full of absolutely brilliant minds, stimulating lectures, and encouragement from both your peers and PIs. Great benefits.

      Cons

It's impossible to live nearby on a research assistant's salary.

      Pros

Great benefits, excellent facilities, smart coworkers, cooperative culture. People at Rockefeller are dedicated and capable, and do their part to support the university's mission and its students and faculty.

      Cons

Low turnover means little room for advancement, experience will vary depending on the personality of your supervisor.

Probably one of the best places to work in academic biomedical research science.

Jan 17, 2014 - Research Associate in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good salary (for academia - obviously does not compare well to industry), great benefits / insurance plans etc., amazing housing provisions. World class core facilities and scientific environment. Tolerable level of bureaucracy.

      Cons

No complaints that are not common to academia at large.
