I worked at Rockford Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Generally supportive parents and administration. Stable district now (after teacher strike in the early '90s)

    Cons

It's a biggish district with just one high school, and sports tend to get more attention than they deserve, in my opinion.

I have been working at Rockford Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Rockford Public Schools has been known to have a poor reputation, but the district seems to be making efforts to turn that reputation around. The latest Superintendent is a local guy with ties to the community. He communicates pretty well to the district employees and the community. All in all, he is a good man making an honest effort to rebuilt our schools and the trust in the community.

New building renovations and career academy model have us taking steps in the right direction.

    Cons

The community is very divided on their trust in the district. Rightly so in many ways. The leadership in the district has been in flux for years. Many superintendents lasting only for a short time, instituting policies that history has shown will be gone once they leave for something better or get pushed out. It is difficult to put much faith in something that you know may not be around for very long.

There are lots of great teachers still working hard and giving an honest effort, but a lot more that are frustrated, tired, and burned out. May not be unique to this area, but this is the only district in which I have experience.

    Advice to Management

I believe their is too much bureaucracy at the district office. Seams to be many mangers managing managers, all of which trickles down to the staff in the schools. Keep lines of communication open and continue the course with the direction we are heading.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Rockford Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Quality of work environment. quality co-workers, predictable hours, decent benefits, knowledgeable management, top of the line facilities, new equipment, solid leadership.

    Cons

Quality of benefits fading for government employment, low wages in comparison to private company's. Little to zero opportunity for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Elitist culture and nepotism needs to be removed from the senior level management. Current culture is stunting company growth potential by minimizing the opportunities for quality employees to advance within the company. Employees with growth potential are leaving for better and more promising opportunities.
