I have been working at Rockler full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very friendly coworkers and management. The company has a strong focus on employee wellness. They offer incentives for certain healthy activities or habits. Salaries are fair, but not at the top of the scale. There is a decent employer match for 401K and also a profiit-sharing program. Fairly robust lunchroom vending area with many choices, including healthy food. The health insurance program has a wide variety of available plans at reasonable rates for each level of coverage.

    Cons

Building is old and getting crowded.

    Advice to Management

Continue with the focus you have on employee well-being and also the work you do to find good health coverage and related benefits.

I worked at Rockler full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great HR, Approachable VPs, Some talented coworkers, great health initiatives

    Cons

Management squabbling, poor pay, inter-department fighting, fail horribly to do easy things, wastes money, poor computers, no personal accountability, bonuses tied to company performance not individual, no handicap accessibility for top floor

    Advice to Management

    Fire under performers INCLUDING managers

I worked at Rockler full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For the most part a bunch of really good people, who want to do well. An exciting niche industry, with a hard-core loyal following.

    Cons

Constant micro-managing interference from owner/CEO has pushed away far too many good people and undermined the company's potential.

    Advice to Management

Company has outgrown its owner/CEO, who should step aside for a new leader to take Rockler into the future. Upper management in constant upheaval - no clear path for future.

I worked at Rockler full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great product development team and fairly decent hours

    Cons

Total disconnect between customer facing associates and anyone at HQ. Middle and upper management spends most time trying to not be accountable and hide information from owner. Upper management is a revolving door.

    Advice to Management

Reach out, listen and value your customer facing associates. they are the face of Rockler and deliver sales

I worked at Rockler (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay. Good hours. Innovative products.

    Cons

Management is not open to feedback and often very hostile. I was micromanaged and not allowed to do any actual leading. As the ASM, I was really forced to act as an overpaid sales associate. I was only there 3 months before quitting.

    Advice to Management

Store managers need to be better trained on the onboarding process and making new leaders feel welcome at the company. If an employee comes to you with a concern, probably don't just start screaming at them. They will probably stop communicating and just quit. Like I did.

I worked at Rockler part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Based in western suburbs of Minneapolis with 34 stores nationwide with warehouse/distribution center and three stores in the Twin Cities.

    Cons

They (She) have burned through three or four presidents in the past six or seven years. The corporate office is a mess with hard working people who are controlled by the owner who simply doesn't want to let professionalism and creativity make their lasting mark.

The retail stores pay horrid part time wages (10.89.) The uniform (shirts) is of terrible quality and, while required to be worn, the company only provides one at no charge (so much for wearing stink free clothes around our most precious customers and fellow employees).

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees, then customer then share the profit with your shareholders-oh that's right it is a private company- then share the profit with the owner.

    Pros

great products and creative product development

    I worked at Rockler full-time

    Pros

expand knowledge and skills in woodworking

    Cons

felt like no clear direction or goals for company as a whole, silos between each department were severe, adverse to change, had more than 3 different CEO candidates come and go within the last 4 years, that says a lot right there.

    Advice to Management

Get a clear path for growth, goals, and a leadership team that is willing to work towards them.
