I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Innovation is the culture of Rockwell Collins. As a Co-Op I was still in college when I worked at Rockwell so when I started there I didn't think they would care what I had to say when it came to doing things as important as adjusting the manufacturing process. My bosses were always encouraging me to pursue my ideas even if I made a mistake. Great place to work.

    Cons

The only thing I didn't like was the location. Cedar Rapids isn't the most exciting place in the world to live when you're a college kid. Don't get me wrong, there were tons of interns there and I made a lot of friends, it's just in the middle of Iowa and there isn't a ton going on. But it's 30 min away from Iowa City and if you're not from a big city like I am then Cedar Rapids is just fine. Personally I'm a big city guy.

    Advice to Management

There managers were all extremely nice. They had no problem approving projects and never micromanaged. I would go weeks without talking to my manager outside of a meeting because they really trust their workers.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Great technology
Very cool projects. Good technology resources. Access to data and advanced industry tools was very good.

    Cons

Too much communication lost in management. Many times teams were the last to know of a big development for the vision of the project. Better communication needed. Find ways to make each team member feed valuable.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Intelligent team of HR professionals.

    Cons

Some team members were territorial and self-serving.

    Advice to Management

Rotations are effective to build bench strength but in practice they were often given to a select population of perceived favorite people.

I worked at Rockwell Collins as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Everyone that I have worked with at Rockwell Collins has been outstanding. Extremely nice, intelligent, and helpful
    - Love the company culture. Has a very Midwest friendly feel
    - HR/UR has done an outstanding job developing the student program to be extremely interactive. Lots of social opportunities and are give full time work

Overall, I could go on forever about how much I have loved my experience with Rockwell Collins. Between my internship and co-op I was constantly being challenged to excel and learn. Rockwell Collins has given me so many opportunities that I'm truly grateful for.

    Cons

    - Location. Although I have never found this a problem, it may be for some. However, if you're willing to try new things, meet new people, and explore outside of your comfort zone there are plenty of opportunities. Between Iowa City, NewBo, and the nearby larger cities there is always something to do!
    - Some may not enjoy Rockwell Collins because of the pace. I would be no means classify RC to be similar to some of the big name tech companies such as Google. My experience with Rockwell Collins has been that one of their primary concerns is their people. They help to provide a good work life balance giving a very "Midwestern" atmosphere.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pays okay in the area, teams will occasionally have outings together

    Cons

They really bank on that you'll be too scared to go anywhere else. So once you hit a threshold in both pay and career, they hope that because you tie your family and self down - that you won't leave.

    Advice to Management

Allow for new ideas to float around, even if we don't always act upon them. We are entering a new era, not stuck back in the 90s anymore.
