Pros
Cons
  • Very large corporation -- close to 20K employees worldwide/7-8000 in Cedar Rapids (in 121 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 22 reviews)

    Pros

great process for product development and engineering.

    Cons

cronyism is widespread. Some low level managers keep good work and opportunities for their friends and people they like; process for career development is only on paper.

    Advice to Management

Keep low rank managers in check!

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice Management. Like the people i work with. Easy to change areas if you want to in order to maintain a career path.

    Cons

Takes a long time to get salary up to decent level. They low ball everything. Below national average. Started hiring from lower quality universities. Used to be they hired top %10 from Top 10 universities. Went bad about 15 years ago when we went public. management shifted to add more money to executive level which means less down below.

    Advice to Management

Give more perks. you have a slush fund. spend it on the workers not just office. More meals for our performance would be nice.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins (More than a year)

    Pros

Many nice people. Most of the facility is newly remodeled.

    Cons

Management is closed off. There are to many layers of management. They do not take any advice from people below them. If they need to cut costs they do the easiest thing and cut people. In cedar rapids alone there are about 1000 people that make product and 9000 who don't, great minds.

    Advice to Management

Think about the company (not your personal status).

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable (if you're in a technical department)
    Nice people.
    Reasonable work environment.

    Cons

If you're not "pals" with mid-management pay and opportunities are restricted. -
Software and Service departments are run with a manufacturing mentality:
-Marketing drives product development with a "let's do what they're doing" mindset.
-Engineers with product ideas don't have a research & development avenue (though they want you to think they do)
-Limited room for growth - Management-heavy.

    Advice to Management

Look for product innovation from engineers not marketing people - you're losing people whose ideas have no fertile ground in which to develop.

    Pros

Great people, great work life balance. Pay is highest in the area.

    Cons

Pay for performance is not consistent. Performance means nothing as the company continues to get rid of good people, high performers and keep the less paid, less skilled workers.

    Advice to Management

If the company is not hitting the mark, and reduction in force is needed, and the company is faced to cut then offer employees lower salary or different positions instead of letting good people go.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Conservative and industry-focused. New CEO is trying to get the culture to move forward.

    Cons

Senior leadership has been with the Company for most of their careers so no perspective of what other companies are doing. Culture is one that they promote their own and outsiders are not always welcome or looked at the same as homegrown talent

    Advice to Management

Be more open and transparent with employee issues.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, with work life balance, HR open to changing the work environment for the better (dress code, parking, dropping wellness program)

    Cons

Management VP/GM advertises an open door policy but without a power point presentation you had better keep your questions/comments to yourself - was told not to talk to VP/GMs unless you have a reason. If you are not an engineer it is held against you.

    Advice to Management

Too many special project employees (protected by management). Unless they can show worth they need to be let go.
