I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pays okay in the area, teams will occasionally have outings together

    Cons

They really bank on that you'll be too scared to go anywhere else. So once you hit a threshold in both pay and career, they hope that because you tie your family and self down - that you won't leave.

    Advice to Management

Allow for new ideas to float around, even if we don't always act upon them. We are entering a new era, not stuck back in the 90s anymore.

    Pros

    Great benefits and time off

    Cons

No carrer growth outside of HQ, which is located in Iowa

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees as if they live in Northern Virginia not Iowa.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting technology, you won't be bored. Talented colleagues.

    Cons

Engineering management dysfunctional. Management through intimidation.

    Advice to Management

Listen to manager's reports, not just managers. If multiple talented and capable engineers leave or are forced out over a period of years, maybe it says more about the manager than the exitees.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, good people. My co-workers were always willing to help out. They have some company sponsored events throughout the year that help break up the normal day to day routine.
Lots of analysis tools and side rooms where you can dock your computer and focus on your project. Flexible hours too - lots of people showed up at 9am or other more unusual hours than the standard 8-5.

Overall it is a good place to work , but your manager will dictate how enjoyable the experience will be in the end.

    Cons

Not a lot of direction on projects. Engineers shuffled around too much, which promotes chaos leading to lots of mistakes and long ramp up times. Project schedules are ridiculous, forcing the engineers to do a month's work in 2 weeks, while expecting high detail in the analysis and documentation. The PCB layout process takes too long because of the schematic / layout software incompatibilities. It isn't uncommon for engineers to have multiple projects going at the same time.

    Advice to Management

More time to do projects, and less shuffling of engineers and people. This will promote better project flow with less problems.

I worked at Rockwell Collins as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay & benefits, office was newly renovated, people were friendly. Enjoyed the project I worked on and was able to see it make an impact in my department.

    Cons

Worked alone 95% of the time and didn't really get to collaborate with my team. Saw other interns/coops who had a much better time with their team. I believe this was partially due to my mentor and the work that I was doing but it would have been nice to actually work with other people instead of mostly alone.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People are great, the individual contributors are great to work with, management doesn’t try to keep hard workers on the team. Just want to save budget for them.

    Cons

Benefits are no longer good, lots of uncertainty with the acquisition, can’t work from home without being made feel like you are a slacker

    Advice to Management

Stop forcing people to leave their departments to get raises
