Pros
Cons
  • Have to be ok living in Cedar Rapids (in 125 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 23 reviews)

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong appreciation for workers as PEOPLE and not just numbers and means to attain sales goals. Hard work is awarded with team lunches, dinners, and socials (and sometimes a few bucks). Coworkers are generally very hardworking individuals who take great pride in their work and are dedicated to the people their products are meant to serve

    Cons

Cedar Rapids is okay, but I personally don't want to raise a family there. As a young individual, I would recommend somewhere that has more going on, unless you like more of a country lifestyle! This company also has other locations, of course, so don't let this be a total deterrent.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Your workers love the time you put into developing them as professionals.

    Pros

Cutting edge technology. Positive working environment.

    Cons

Tendency to react slowly to acknowledging that systems are needed to be revamped or totally scrapped before they become a hinderance. Need to improve on talent evaluation with regards to new hires.

    Advice to Management

    Don't be afraid to change.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I generally work with good people. It's a Union environment so our pay raises are fair and built into our contract. The benefits and paid time off are amazing! You'll seriously never find the amount of time off they give us anywhere else.

    Cons

No room for advancement. The job is a little tedious at times. While having a Union is great, it makes getting a promotion impossible (because it goes by seniority rather than work ethic / performance). It also makes it hard for them to fire terrible employees who would never make it outside of a Union environment.

    Advice to Management

Do more to make good employees feel appreciated and not like they're being taken advantage of when they go above and beyond.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people in Texas. Salary is good. 1st line management is very good.

    Cons

Richardson Tx facility is treated as the unwanted step-child by home-base in Cedar Rapids. Lack of local control of the procurement process in Texas causes lost time & schedule, drives up cost and hurts morale. Senior Management seems focused on their personal bottom line and NOT the worker: no pay raise in 2017 yet the company buys B/E Aerospace, seriously? Senior Management is disconnected from the working teams; they "go through the motions" to show concern for the employees with lots of happy-talk news/blogs etc, but it is a facade. No $ for annual raises, yet the company continuously spends $ on videos/programs such as "employee engagement" designed to get more from the worker; how do 'Principal Organizational Development Consultants' help get products designed, built, tested and delivered with 1st time quality? (who are these people?). Health Plan Offerings are not on-par with other aerospace companies. They are High Deductible and very costly.

    Advice to Management

Engage with the working teams at all levels and at all locations, in person, with meaningful 'family' discussions to establish a dialogue to resolve issues and communicate with each other <−−>.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting industry, products and trying to diversify with the B/E acquisition. Lots of employees wanting to help change the culture at the company.

    Cons

Very Cedar Rapids centric--process, tools, decisions, still focused on the "mother ship". As other reviews have mentioned, a protected "good old boy network" is alive and well and discouraging to so many employees. You can continue to not perform, but will have your employment protected because you worked with an exec 20 years ago. Work/life balance is not really embraced within engineering--overtime is managed and top performers are those that are in the office the most, especially working the long hours on nights/weekends.

    Advice to Management

Actually embrace what Kelly Ortberg is trying to do in regards to Performance Excellence, Helping Others Succeed, Think Big. Weed out the leaders that are just giving lip service to the new vision. Embrace diversity really in your leadership team--still pretty white middle age white males.

    Pros

They purchased BE Aerospace. remains to be seen how they will treat the business.

    Cons

None yet. Still have old business name on the building.
