  • Very large corporation -- close to 20K employees worldwide/7-8000 in Cedar Rapids (in 121 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 22 reviews)

I worked at Rockwell Collins (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cedar Rapids: Friendly, non-competitive environment. Provide many training opportunities, good benefits, and options for career paths. Coworkers are friendly, but be prepared to interact with many separate and independent layers of management (product line management, project management, direct management, and department management to only name a few for engineering).

    Cons

Cedar Rapids campus is rather large and easy to get turned around, but after awhile you'll learn most areas. Still need a map to locate certain conference rooms or office locations. Due to the size of the company, you can feel feel insignificant with little control of the scope of your work. They are very detail oriented and always have a policy or procedure for everything. Documentation overkill.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    1 week paid shutdown
Flexible schedule (depending on your boss)
Decent benefits, however they had decreased significantly while I was there.
Dedicated people. The CEO is desperately trying to change the culture. I was at Rockwell almost 9 years, and worked in 3 different departments. Each department was almost likes its own company--the culture was very different in each area, which sometimes was refreshing and sometimes not. There are a lot of opportunities to move into different areas, however it is very much about who you know and not always your skills.
Great co workers, I had the opportunity to work with some top notch people.

    Cons

Very old school thinking, it was very common to see 35-45 year anniversary parties, this also impeded culture change. I remember my boss telling me that it was unfortunate that when you looked for a job internally, you really had to research who you were going to work for, because there were so many inadequate leaders.
While CEO wants to change, the company culture is very much ' We've always done it this way". If you are in leadership, as I was, leadership was not leadership, it was management. It was very hard to be empowered to make decisions. There is very much a culture of CYA and mistrust, which is unfortunate and big reason why I left. I was hired to make decisions and grow a department and it became apparent very quickly that was not going to happen and that I was to keep the status quo and limit their growth and development, which was demotivating to me and frustrating to my team of how management viewed them. The same people in leadership keep getting shuffled around and do mediocre jobs. Look to hire the right talent instead of doing x person a favor because he or she friends with a person in senior management or a golf buddy of someone. Basically I found leadership there to be a place to grow stagnant and collect paycheck without much effort until you retire. I wanted to more out of my employment (opportunities to grow as a leader) and left.

    Advice to Management

Rockwell preaches about the value of people, but unfortunately does not practice it. Many development opportunities have been cut over the years. Most of my personal growth opportunities I paid for out of my own pocket. If you truly value your workforce, develop them Stop shuffling the same people around in leadership and either develop them so they are ready for the role or have courage and get rid of them and hire the right people.
