Pros
Cons
  • Cedar Rapids is a little far away from most of my family and is also far away from most of its nearest cultural centers (besides Iowa City) (in 118 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 22 reviews)

I have been working at Rockwell Collins (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Rockwell Collins is very forward thinking and is really concerned for their employee's well-being. They truly are working in the direction of making Rockwell Collins the "Best Place to Work".

    Cons

A big downside to working at Rockwell Colins is adjusting for the Economic Turbulence in the airline industry. But I do have to say they really try to adjust for it without having to do big layoffs.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are pretty good. The company is good about taking care of their employees. Work is 4 days on with 2 days off, 8 hours shifts...pretty nice. Job can be challenging and very fast paced at times, but do get breaks certain times of the year which is nice.

    Cons

Communication between managers and subordinates is not the greatest. If you work nights, sometimes upcoming changes only come word of mouth from co-workers from other shifts. Seems to be a lot of talk but no action or just quick fixes instead of a permanent solutions to problems. If you work day/swings, shifts are rotating, (ex. AABB) but 90% of time it not a set rotation, you will work whatever the manger puts you on including some random night shifts thrown in the mix. This makes planning your personal life difficult at times even though the monthly schedule is published 3 weeks prior to the start of the month.

    Advice to Management

Put more effort in getting changes accomplished and problems fixed. Make set work schedules.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good place to go to train to be an engineer. Top to bottom engineering culture, including most of senior management leadership. Depth of experience in many disciplines is world-class.

    Cons

They define innovation in terms of current products and addressed market. Comfortable being second or third to market. Don't mind missing important trends. Tend to be Cedar-centric, believing the world revolves around them. Not willing to co-locate corporate leadership with the customers, so they aren't perceived as important players.

    Advice to Management

It's hubris to think that you can understand your customers with a one or two person presence at their site. Don't travel to your customers, live with your customers. Manufacturing and engineering support can be wherever, but leadership needs to show commitment. When we complain that other companies are bad-mouthing us, or feeding the customer false information, the lesson is not that they are bad companies or bad people; the lesson is that they spend more time with the customer than we do. Its our problem, not theirs

    Pros

    They support their products forever

    Cons

They support products that are 25-30 years old and other products that are cutting edge industry leaders

    Advice to Management

Remember some of the engineers have twice as many years on the job as you do.

    Pros

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

very organized as a large company; probably due to the military branch. good nurturing upper
management who, if you had some credentials to begin with, would give you the freedom to accomplish ambitious things with minimum micro-management.

    Cons

corporate decisions could relocate entire groups or end large products without visibility to the
    people in the ranks.

    Advice to Management

i'm not sure that i am that wise...

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time

    Pros

Great place to work. Great benefit and work space. The is an amazing drive to ensure that every employee feels engaged and they is consistent drive by upper management to improve manager-employees relationships and promote diversity within the company. 3 Week vacation per year for starters with an additional 10 day plant shutdown paid vacation in December for Christmas.

    Cons

Compensation could be better. Some of the older, inefficient and outdated processes could use some revamping.
