Pros
Cons
  • Have to be ok living in Cedar Rapids (in 125 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 23 reviews)

I have been working at Rockwell Collins (More than a year)

    Pros

Many nice people. Most of the facility is newly remodeled.

    Cons

Management is closed off. There are to many layers of management. They do not take any advice from people below them. If they need to cut costs they do the easiest thing and cut people. In cedar rapids alone there are about 1000 people that make product and 9000 who don't, great minds.

    Advice to Management

Think about the company (not your personal status).

I have been working at Rockwell Collins (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good place to work. Good benefits with 2 weeks paid vacation to start. Management can be good and bad based on area.

    Cons

Management could learn rounds from their senior employees. When fresh faces come in it's hdd sometimes for them to grasp the culture and what's all going on the shop floor.

    Advice to Management

Ask senior personnel what can be changed or fixed. Get engaged and learn the process so office and shop floor has better communication.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable (if you're in a technical department)
    Nice people.
    Reasonable work environment.

    Cons

If you're not "pals" with mid-management pay and opportunities are restricted. -
Software and Service departments are run with a manufacturing mentality:
-Marketing drives product development with a "let's do what they're doing" mindset.
-Engineers with product ideas don't have a research & development avenue (though they want you to think they do)
-Limited room for growth - Management-heavy.

    Advice to Management

Look for product innovation from engineers not marketing people - you're losing people whose ideas have no fertile ground in which to develop.

    Cons

Opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies are lost in large bureaucracy.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Challenging work with career flexibility.
    Management following long-term growth plan
    Maintainable work-life balance

    Cons

Forced into cost cutting strategies to attain commercial business
Benefits have been cut as market conditions deteriorate.
Little input to how performance reviews are determined.

    Advice to Management

Spent FY16 focused on employee survey. Within one year into new fiscal year took away merit to spend on largest acquisition in company history.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are kept studiously in line with market average.

    Cons

Imagine if you told your children that you had to cancel buying Christmas presents because money was tight. And then you bought a new mansion. Your children would be understandably upset. Most employees at Rockwell Collins are under-compensated and have been told that there will be salary freezes for 2/3 of 2017, plus layoffs. Simultaneously, Rockwell Collins is buying B/E Aerospace for $6.4 billion. Employees are understandably upset.

    Advice to Management

Management has a penchant for treating employees as though they are ignorant children. Why would you hire professionals and then insult their intelligence?

I worked at Rockwell Collins (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cedar Rapids: Friendly, non-competitive environment. Provide many training opportunities, good benefits, and options for career paths. Coworkers are friendly, but be prepared to interact with many separate and independent layers of management (product line management, project management, direct management, and department management to only name a few for engineering).

    Cons

Cedar Rapids campus is rather large and easy to get turned around, but after awhile you'll learn most areas. Still need a map to locate certain conference rooms or office locations. Due to the size of the company, you can feel feel insignificant with little control of the scope of your work. They are very detail oriented and always have a policy or procedure for everything. Documentation overkill.
