Pros
Cons
  • Cedar Rapids is a little far away from most of my family and is also far away from most of its nearest cultural centers (besides Iowa City) (in 118 reviews)

  • I'd rather be an intern than full time as there doesn't seem to be much of a work/life balance once you're hired full time (in 22 reviews)

    Pros

It seems if you want to work in Cedar Rapids Iowa, this can be a job you can just work until you retire.

    Cons

You name it, middle management is 'only' out for their well being and will cut anyone loose that doesn't tow the party line. Never worked for a more unethical company in my career - don't let management tell you where to 'hide the money' without explicit consent.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great intelligent people. I worked for a smaller BU with diverse products and projects to work on. Opportunity to work and various aspects of the products.

    Cons

Too much processes which cause stagnate any innovation idea. Local management do not have discretionary funding for engineering to try new ideas.

    Advice to Management

Do less counting numbers. Put investment in long term products that are less affected by the annual congressional budget.

I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I made a couple of good friends and worked with a couple of people I liked and respected.

    Cons

Poway management was horrific, didn't listen to employees when they voice issues with management, released employees under less than honest reasoning, upper management is narrow-minded. Started as a small company and maintained the clique mentality of "newcomers not welcome".

    Advice to Management

Get rid of most of your managers in Poway and get real ones...people that aren't engineers and have some people skills. Listen to what your staff is saying. Walk the walk and talk the talk. Show your staff you mean what you say and are really working to improve. Don't sit in your office with your door closed and expect things to change.

    Pros

Stability within the commercial and defense industry is a good thing for job security.

A lot of process and a lot of the career growth is found in Cedar Rapids. The office outside of the main HQ are lacking.

    Advice to Management

Pay your top performers better and stop trying to satisfy the status quo.
