Pros
Cons
  • Work/Life balance was a joke as I was on travel for as much as 8 months at a time with only a few trips allowed back home (in 15 reviews)

  • Hidebound in some of its processes; some senior management slightly too in thrall to external consultants (in 23 reviews)

I worked at Rolls-Royce as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great internship experience with lots of opportunities to move around once in the door.

    Cons

There is a lot of red tape in the aerospace industry in order to ensure safety and security that can occasionally be frustrating

I worked at Rolls-Royce as an intern

    Pros

In my experience, I had a really great team to help me learn. The culture there seemed very conducive to learning. I learned so much in a very short amount of time.
Other Pros: $1200 housing stipend for local interns or subsidized housing of out-of-towners, no cube farm ("sit where ever you want"), beautiful campus, there are some seriously cool things to work on there, I was given a real level of responsibility on day one. Highly recommend for an internship. Also, flexible work hours are a great perk! And being in Downtown Indy helps! 24 hour parking garage is a cool perk; I never have to worry about parking if I want to a restaurant or concert or something Downtown on the weekend.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, therefore very slow moving to change if necessary. There are a ton of levels to talk to if you need anything serious done. I am weary about a full-time position here simply because of this. Additionally, it feels like all of the big decisions happen overseas in the UK. Sometimes it feels like the US and UK offices aren't on the exact same page. It feels like the top level management in the company is starting to address some of these issues though, Otherwise, great place!

    Advice to Management

Work on communication down the food chain. Allow more opportunities for people to move up. Simplify as much of the guidance documentation and management levels as possible.

    I worked at Rolls-Royce full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with, good experience for anyone getting into engineering. Not much help from management as they typically are not experience on the product.

    Cons

Lots of management, not much help from. Seems they only promote young inexperience employees for management. My experience is with one devision of the company. May follow through with the rest.

    Advice to Management

Learn the product and be prepared when employees are asking questions for help.

    I have been working at Rolls-Royce full-time

    Pros

It is a laid back work environment, and has mostly exciting work, and the people are great. I love coming into work. Good vacation and decent benefits.

    Cons

Right now things seem to be up in the air. A lot of change in leadership is happening and I think people are looking for direction. People are a little uneasy with how things are going, but we'll see how they pan out.

    Advice to Management

Provide clear direction as to where the company is headed. Be decisive and make good decisions. Define project requirements with a validation criteria up front instead of at the end of projects.

    Pros

It seems like a place that values knowledge, learning, and employee development. Additionally, there are quite a few 20-somethings and 30-somethings.

    Cons

The usual downsides of working at a large corporation -- inefficiencies here and there.

    Advice to Management

Keep looking for new products to produce. Continue valuing engineers, education, and employee development.
