I have been working at Root Insurance full-time

    Pros

Incredible company growth lends itself well to internal mobility for employees in most (but not all) departments; Opportunity to work on interesting problems in novel ways; Very good pay, even better benefits.

    Cons

A poor organizational structure results in overlapping responsibilities for many teams; lack of courage when it comes to firing underperforming senior leaders; some of the financials of the company--especially surrounding debt--are vague, perhaps intentionally so.

I worked at Root Insurance full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nothing, my experience here was terrible.

    Cons

Everyone was in a clique. The Insurance company cares more about their telematics and app than they do their insurance department and the claims employees. For example: They took away unlimited PTO to the claims team while letting the dev team and corporate keep it. The CEO and Concept have good intentions. But then they hire the new VP from Safe Auto WHO RUINED THAT COMPANY. I quit after they announced he was joining the team. I was already struggling with roots mircomanaging and constant incompetence with their adjusters. The managers are either trying new ideas that don't work or sleeping with each other. They have no set ways of handling everything. I write my own ror. my manager APPROVES it then it is declined by the lawyers and I get yelled at. None of the managers have management experience and act like they are just babysitting.

I worked at Root Insurance full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are some very smart people working on the data science team at Root. Oh, and there's "free" lunch.

    Cons

There is little to no cohesive data science "team" environment; I had taken the job hoping to collaborate with all of the smart people around me, and instead was thrown onto an island all by myself with nothing but a laptop and a smoking hot mess of unintelligible data with no documentation. Typical startup culture, but inexcusable nonetheless. The management, or lack thereof, is appalling. I was encouraged to take hacky shortcuts regularly in my work, but if I had suggested such practices during the 8 hours of interview examination, I'm not so sure I would have been offered the position in the first place. Everything in the name of time! If you're interested in cooking up lots of quarter pounders as fast as you can, then this is your place. If you've done a graduate degree in a technical field and are eager to produce quality, thorough results, I would suggest looking elsewhere. And I would also recommend, if you can help it, adopting the male gender prior to your employment start, as your credibility will likely be in constant question should you identify as a female.

I have been working at Root Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I joined Root as a junior software engineer and I have learned so much about software development and the industry by working here. The company offers plenty of learning and career growth opportunities. Lots of talented developers, fantastic people, healthy culture, nice office, great pay. Root is a really great company to work for. I truly enjoy what I do here.

    Cons

"Startup growing pains" but we overcome them.

    I worked at Root Insurance

    Pros

Working for a start up company is exciting.

    Cons

Unorganized, and no clear path in the industry, extreme micromanaging! This company is going belly up in four years.

I worked at Root Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Root is full of some insanely smart people, both in engineering and design. I feel fortunate to have worked with them and I look forward to staying in touch with everyone. The design team on both the product and marketing side is second to none. If you are in Columbus, I can't think of a stronger bunch of people to work with here. The design systems put in place by the team are smart, innovative, and constantly changing. My boss on the video team is the best boss I've ever had, and I'm going to miss working with him quite a bit.

    Cons

Its in Ohio (a con to me, maybe not to you)
