I have been working at Roots Canada part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Relatively generous pay scale.

    Cons

Bad management. They MICROMANAGE. An hourly critique of sales per customer, units sold, percentages, etc etc. Quotas are HIGH, goals are unrealistic. You cannot FORCEV a customer to purchase MORE than they like, or can AFFORD, simply to meet your sales goals per hour! It is a stressful and demeaning work structure. You are constantly watched and made to feel like a trained animal performing on demand. How EXCITED can one be over high priced sweat pants and caps? There is an arrogance about The entire tone of the company is that of Arrogance and superiority.

I worked at Roots Canada full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The discount is very rewarding if you are a fan of quality leather bags and leather shoes. Most leather products are made in Canada, which ensures high quality and satisfaction for consumers. There is extreme brand loyalty, which makes meeting sales goals much easier. There are no sales quotas, just goals, which are rewarded when met. There are often weekly incentive programs occurring with generous rewards.

    Cons

The quality of their clothing has deteriorated a bit, as they began outsourcing their clothing production in recent years. Long-time consumers recognize this deterioration and are very vocal about their distaste. One of the CEOs is a bit difficult to please. Most employees are terrified of him. The other is quite pleasant. Good cop, bad cop type situation.

I worked at Roots Canada part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good discount Positive environment among employees Clear methodology in the way things operate Emphasis on working as a team Found it easy to meet sales goals but was not terrified if I didn't hit my target

    Cons

Worked at two locations in same district with VERY different managers One was hyper critical and a very poor communicator, I was constantly fearful I would be fired Other was extremely well respected and kind but kept me as a sales associate despite giving me management level responsibility and expecting me to work up to 40 hours as a part-time employee in school

I worked at Roots Canada full-time

    Pros

    - discount on clothing -relaxed clothing for work/dresscode

    Cons

poor management, DM and Regional Managers are a total mess, zero communication, claim to like their employees and are fair but they are unrealistic, unrealistic sales goals, conflict of interest (retail managers hire family members and friends of family over regular applicants); poor work life balance - rotating hours from evening shifts and morning shifts; expected to work ALL holidays

I worked at Roots Canada part-time

    Pros

Co-workers were great to work with Good first time job

    Cons

-Unrealistic sales goals, too high. Management would condemn or cut your hours if you're not making target. Too stressful environment for little pay. -Micro-management - breathing down your neck even though sales associates are doing most of the work, not them. -Associates encouraged to sell more for incentives such as a t-shirt, $5 Starbucks gift card or hat. Not worth it. -On calls were brutal - especially since most associates are in school or have it plan their life around unpredictability. -Hours based on if management favours you, hours always being cut.

I worked at Roots Canada full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Company discount is fantastic, 50% on just about everything in the store - Get to wear Roots Hoodys and Sweatpants to work, easily the best part of the job - Laidback culture compared to other companies - Much of the product sold in the store is still made in Canada - Compared to other retailers, customers that shop at Roots are great

    Cons

    - Company sometimes sets outrageous sales goals, even on the typically slower traffic days of the week. staff are often expected to be on top of every single customer that comes into the store and to make sure every single customer that comes into the store to browse, leaves with a purchase. Be prepared, if management notices your sales are not meeting daily targets, you will have to answer for that and it may lead you to being written up - at times, there is lack or no transparency what so ever and sometimes upper management isn't always honest or doesn't communicate - Head office, DMs and other Managers often play favouritism which can create a lot of politics and gets in the way of decisions. - Compared to a lot of other retailers, this company is often disorganized, changing their minds on a dime on operational decisions for example - These guys will try to underpay you even if you come with a lot of retail experience
