I have been working at Rovi full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The biggest plus is that the work is interesting and challenging, and my team is full of nice, competent people. I have found everyone easy to work with and I generally like the work environment. My boss is very encouraging and understanding.

    Cons

It's a big nerd fest here for sure, but nerds are cool.

    Advice to Management

Hire some more full timers please. The contractors are great, but they are very hard to schedule with.

New talent and new management throughout the organization. Customer centric company with a focus on long term growth and innovation. All star industry professionals. Excellent benefits.

In the process of executing a turnaround strategy, although definitely turning the corner. Still sorting out some organizational and product details.

    Advice to Management

The positive changes are working. Stay committed to the plan.

    I worked at Rovi full-time

    Pros

Everyone in my immediate office was knowledgeable, passionate and friendly. Our local management team was the best I've ever experienced. The benefits and office catering, etc. were good, too.

    Cons

The larger corporate management only cares about one thing: profit. They axed half of our office, losing irreplaceable talent for the sake of saving money with overseas labor. As much as I'd love to return to work in an alternate environment with the same people, ultimately I feel for those who are still there. If you get a job here, know that you have no security whatsoever. Don't ever allow yourself to feel comfortable.

    Advice to Management

The patent lawsuits. The horrible press. Your lack of concern for a dedicated workforce when faced with an opportunity to save money. The disdain of your remaining employees. The hokey corporate culture projects that always fall flat because no one actually believes in Rovi. Step down. You're failing.

I worked at Rovi full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some employees are really nice. Middle management generally care and are bright people. Great food and nice benefits. Nice facilities and office space.

    Cons

Managements constant lies and deception with employees. No integrity from managers at all. They will say anything to pretend they care about employees but actual go out of the way to kill moral.

    Advice to Management

Change the company focus from short-term goals to long term solution to the greed and lie permeating management

I worked at Rovi (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salaries were raised during the Rovi era for former TV GUIDE employees. Before several Reduction in Force, a tradition carried over from the Gemstar days, before the Gemstar CEO disappeared somewhere in the People's Republic of China, Inc.

    Cons

A poisonous culture and the typical MBA attitude of the last decade or so that if you have the sizzle, you don't need to worry about the steak, so let us in the upper management reward each other obscenely, treat the bulk of the workforce like game pieces entirely too often, and let our impulsive whims become Bold New Directions of Leadership...as long as they can be, we hope, dressed up to Look Good to the Street. Meanwhile, let's go lose a few more patent defense trials. Hey, we're Supposed to win a few!

    Advice to Management

A return to the patrician concern of a Henry Ford or a Walter Annenberg isn't necessarily the best option, but the current Let's loot the enterprise as long as we can ride this injured pony policy doesn't help, either. Firing talented people, for example, to outsource internationally, and attempting to automate processes which are rather complex (and so don't automate well when the software designers are themselves consistently in no-job-security churn) are consistently losing strategies in even the short run, much less the long run. But in the long run, you're on the board of some other fading corporation or two, and shopping for a fourth McMansion somewhere fashionable.

    Pros

Outside of management, coworkers are knowledgeable, adaptable, and eager to collaborate.

    Cons

Toxic work environment fueled by shouting, buck passing, and all caps emails. Managers are rewarded for cutting costs instead of accepting risks or fostering innovation or growth, but all eventually find themselves back on the chopping block the next time something goes wrong, and the buck needs to be passed down the chain of command. A culture of mistrust, anger, and fear pervades all levels.

    Advice to Management

    Complete reorganization of corporate management.
