I worked at Rowan Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked mostly with departments outside HR, and truly enjoyed it. Other departments were more open to working collaboratively.

    Cons

Poor communication between management and employees has caused low morale and lack of trust. Employees don't feel valued, and are constantly worried about losing their job.

    Advice to Management

It's the little things. Employees understand the economy is down, but there are other ways to show employees that they are valued and appreciated.

    Pros

    Great pay and benefits
    Time off is awesome
    Paid training

    Cons

Work ethic is not important for advancement (could be a pro for some), mainly rely on buddy/relative system for advancement. Poor leadership in first line supervisors. Though the company promotes high safety expectations, this is rarely followed at the job site.

I have been working at Rowan Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Rig level management is outstanding!

    Cons

The deepwater division, rig manager and up, lead using poor leadership skills and horrible management skills. HR chooses who gets laid off or transferred without any input from rig leadership. Some of the worst rig managers I have ever dealt with are in deepwater. Pay cuts come about every 3 months, and insurance has gone up.

    Advice to Management

Bring the Rowan mentality that made this company so great to work for to the deepwater division.

    Pros

Benefits were good, location was nice, office environment was nice

    Cons

In IT, there were too many changes. It was a constant routine of firing and hiring employees. The environment was volatile.

I have been working at Rowan Companies full-time

    Pros

    *Friendly coworkers
*Competent middle management - technical supervisors are familiar with the work being done by direct reports
    *Senior management is (relatively) accessible
*Honesty and ethical behavior are expected
*Safety culture is preached without cease, and we're seeing positive trends in LTIR and TRIR numbers
*Company is fairly well positioned to survive the downturn

    Cons

Drilling contractors have been hard-hit by the low oil prices, Rowan has responded by cutting costs, which included reductions in "perks," and lay-offs.
Remaining staff are working to perform tasks that were previously handled by multiple employees. A lot of people are doing the work of two people, without any additional recognition or compensation.
There have been no raises for 2 consecutive years.
It's a tough time to be in oil.

There is a bit of nepotism here; if you know the right people, and are one of the favorites, you get more opportunities, which result in more promotions, and better pay.
