I worked at Rowan Companies full-time

    Pros

High salaries when the industry was booming. Great people working on the rigs, many of which are under appreciated.

    Cons

As with many companies in Oil and Gas, it is a good-ole-boy company. If you are well connected with the upper management, your career is stable and clear. If you are not a part of this click, you are at a serious disadvantage.

Upper management is severely disconnected from the real world on the rigs. Jumping to conclusions and creating processes that do not have accurate basis or research has become a norm.

HR implements processes that are shady at best, un-ethical practices and skirt the edge of illegal.

    Advice to Management

Management does not have a true grasp on rig operations, information that is fed up the chain of command is biased and filtered due to fear of reprisals.

    Pros

Insurance was good. Paid training. The good old buddy system is abundant, so, if you know some one or married into someones family, or from Quitman, Ms. You could become part of the click. Affectionately refereed to as the 601 club.

    Cons

Trust no one, you do not know who is related to who. Internal clicks exist. Demand too much from employees on the rigs. Safety is number one until it interferes with operations or the rig managers budget. .

    Advice to Management

Practice your own ethics training, I continually complained that written safety policies were not being followed and maintenance parts were being cut from requisitions. I was terminated seven days prior to the two year bonus pay out. Not one penny was I paid. Was that ethical? When employees are treated poorly..... that will bleed over to customer relations. Surely the Rowan brothers are rolling in their graves!

I worked at Rowan Companies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent Salary and decent work hours.

    Cons

Lack of true leadership in several departments. More managers than actual leaders.

    Advice to Management

Rowan Companies need to train their managers how to be leaders and remove unfit managers from their positions. Prior experience needs should be considered when determining positions within the company.

    Pros

    Team mindset from rig personnel.

    Cons

People in the office creating no value added work to offshore employees.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget that you built this company with good people. This is Rowan, not Transocean.

I have been working at Rowan Companies full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits.
    Competative salary.
    Expanding fleet.
    Paid training.

    Cons

Rowan must have the most racist employees I have ever met in the oil field.
The management have are safety concious until budget gets in the way.
They expect a mile from its employees but wont give an inch.
Not the company I thaught it was needs to remove useless uneducated unqualified persons from the maintenance dept, crane ops do not make good Electricians.

    Advice to Management

Loose the buddy system for hiring and promoting. Get some real talent.

I have been working at Rowan Companies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    benefits are good
mostly friendly culture with helpful coworkers
the offices are nice if you have the opportunity to work at corp

    Cons

No raises. talk a big game about rewarding performance but it is talk only. Executives have thin skin and will not be truthful on expectations. Good performance can be punished and bad performance is rewarded. Rowan has become about brown nosing. It has changed.

    Advice to Management

Management spends more time sticking knives into backs than understanding how to run a business

    Pros

Very strongly positioned company compared to the rest of the peer companies in the industry.

    Cons

management is very strongly centered around performance that will only enhance their year end bonuses. Although considerable layoffs were implemented throughout the year, management still rewarded themselves multiple hefty bonuses well above target although the oil market suffers

    Advice to Management

since new CEO, the culture is an us and them mindset when it comes to policy changes. Sr management feels they are above making changes that affect themselves.

    Cons

In IT, there were too many changes. It was a constant routine of firing and hiring employees. The environment was volatile.

    Pros

    Great pay and benefits
    Time off is awesome
    Paid training

    Cons

Work ethic is not important for advancement (could be a pro for some), mainly rely on buddy/relative system for advancement. Poor leadership in first line supervisors. Though the company promotes high safety expectations, this is rarely followed at the job site.
