I worked at Royal Ahold full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Healthy growing company with very solid position in the Food Retail market on the east coast. Opportunities to grow professionally in newly merged company will be plentiful. Truly cutting edge with well established PeaPod on-line grocery shopping division.

    Cons

Centralized approach to marketing and merchandising often in conflict with very local nature of grocery retail leading to sub-optimal results. Organization structure inhibits optimizing synergies of brick & mortar, on-line and local marketing opportunities facing individual stores.

    Advice to Management

Recognize current organization structure does not allow the flexibility necessary to effectively compete with very strong, local food competition.

    Pros

Excellent working environment offering the tools to grow your career. Friendly associates. Friendly, caring, helpful associates and senior management.

    Cons

Not crazy about the new office layout. I am sure there are a lot of folks that like the new concept.

    Advice to Management

Be open to listening to the folks in the stores and at the lower end of the organization; they have a voice and a lot of good ideas.

I have been working at Royal Ahold part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are friendly and some of the management is friendly.

    Cons

The pay is terrible for a warehouse $10 an hour, especially the fact no one actually appreciates your work.
Inventory pay is $14.50 for Full Time and part time is $10.15 which is unfair considering its all in the same small department (12 people including myself)
Management is terrible, nobody appreciates your work
Too much nepotism and not enough promoting people based off of there WORK
Management is immature, unprofessional, and unreliable. There's all three managers that actually do their job

    Advice to Management

Please pay attention to who you hire in this company because you have managers and leads currently working in your Jersey City warehouse who do not care about their job nor have any good ideas to make the company better. Pay attention to your employees work and hire management who appreciate good, hard workers including myself. I've been with the company for FOUR YEARS and I'm still part time because I dealt with a manager (no longer there) and a lead (currently there) who didn't "disliked me" for some apparent reason. Cut the immaturity in the company and maybe business will run better. Also, please stop wasting food. Too many hungry people in Jersey City including your employees, for you to throw away food. Thank you.

    Cons

I worked at Royal Ahold (More than a year)

    Pros

You can get free Giant goodies

    Cons

Don't ever work here as a temp through Manpower/Experis. I know people who worked for upwards of 3yrs before being offered a full-time position.

Also, the work is boring, uninspiring, and monotonous. If you are looking for something creative, this is definitely not the job for you.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring temps and keeping them on for years. I don't even know how this company gets away with this.

I worked at Royal Ahold full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great compensation, can't beat it in central PA. The cafeteria is scrumptious and now there's a gym too! Lots of advancement opportunities if you prove yourself. Some opportunities to travel. Tuition and certification reimbursement. Generous merit increases. Very generous base pay. Annual bonus program pays higher than market rate.

    Cons

Long hours, working late into the evening and on weekends. Constantly overwhelmed with projects that don't have enough resources to be completed correctly or on time. Constantly stressed team meant lots of turnover and morale issues in the department. Constantly "reorganizing" the company leaving things unsettled since Giant became Ahold USA. Management didn't care about individuals, only cared about getting things done. A little bit of positive reinforcement would have gone a long way. Instead employees felt like they could never get anything right, no matter how long or hard they worked.

    Advice to Management

Be a leader, not a manager.
