I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time

    Pros

Nice building. Decent benefits. Continued massive layoffs may actually help turn around the business, if you happen to be one of the few who survive.

    Cons

Culture of mediocrity. Stuck in meetings all day where nothing gets accomplished. Constantly changing management where people are shuffled around internally but have no specific experience with the processes their new group handles.

    Advice to Management

Which management, yesterday's, today's, or tomorrow's? Current CEO is probably doing the right thing by shedding non core businesses but the problems go so much deeper. Fire the career managers with no actual line experience.

The every day in and out is a Casual setting. Like every job the people grow on you and friendships are formed.

    Cons

Years without pay raises or bonuses for select people. Underpaid wages for the market and city cost of living. Difficulty getting things changed or upgraded.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not the best place to work right now, as RBS is in the process of winding down their businesses in the U.S. and around the world.

    Cons

The business outlook for the next 1-2 years is negative. No communication between the senior management and employees.

    Advice to Management

In times of uncertainty within the bank, the senior management need to have better communication and transparency to keep up employees' morale.

    Pros

Great people, teamwork, interesting and fun. Beautiful building, lots of amenities that we pay through the roof for. Generous vacation.

    Cons

Bank is doing so poorly that no one has gotten raises or bonuses in at least five years in the Operations area. Benefits keep getting worse and worse but we pay more and more for them. Constant threat of being laid off due to bank's performance.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees raises and bonuses. It will greatly improve morale.

  8. "RBS are effectively exiting the US but are still recruiting to wind the business down...but they won't tell you that!"

I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great building, great facilities, nice people

    Cons

Professional review process is routinely abused to manage the comp pool (downwards)
Senior management quote "stay if you want to, leave if you want to...we don't care"
Dishonesty is ingrained within in the Bank's DNA
Seniors get paid even though they've mismanaged the Bank to near extinction...line staff just get base...suck it up or leave.
Line staff are expected to display loyalty by foregoing bonus and quality of life (50+ hour week with no upside) to pay fines for mismanagement and borderline criminal behavior, but the Bank feels NO loyalty to its staff.

    Advice to Management

If you won't do the right thing and fall on your swords then forego your bonuses and accept responsibility for your utter lack of integrity, malfeasance, incompetence and negligence.

Stop lying and cheating, pay your people fairly and conduct yourselves with integrity at all times inside the Bank as well as publicly.

Claiming that RBS now conducts itself ethically, morally and with integrity is not accurate if you give your staff the shaft whilst continuing to enrich yourselves at their expense

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay and great benefits. The company also seems to be committed to diversity in the workplace. I was able to work with a group of very smart and very skilled professionals. Free coffee!

    Cons

Leadership lacks any real direction. The bank is so concerned about the public's perception that they totally forget about their own employees. Annual raises are non existent and only high level execs have seen bonuses in the last 5 years. Bank continues to be fined and post annual losses. Stay away from this place if you want to actually advance in your career.

    Advice to Management

Set a clear direction for the bank and clearly communicate your goals. Focus more on your employees. Happy employees can be the best evangelists to promote a positive reputation in the public space.
