I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time

    Pros

Many of the people in Stamford are very competent and diligent, There is very good Interactions between departments and you can learn new ideas from each area. Stamford has state of the art technology. Work-life balance is very good. There will be long days, but the trade off is management will allow you to work at home every now and then.

    Cons

As of now the bank in the US overall is still shrinking, so an increase in compensation won't happen for most people. Unfortunately this is the same for career opportunities. Its not clear what plans Senior Management has for the US besides trying to IPO their largest US subsidiary, Citizensbank, and the reduction of personnel on the investment bank side. RBS is 84% owned by the UK Taxpayers, so UK management listens very closely to what the government wants the bank to do. In turn UK management tells the US management what the strategy of the day, month or year will be.

    Advice to Management

Overall US management is doing everything they can do under the circumstances as their orders come from the UK.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work / life balance. From day one I had 20 days of PTO to use each year, plus all the banking holidays. A great starting wage. The company has a strong focus on volunteer work, which is good to give back

    Cons

The banking industry is still going through a recovering faze after the '08 crash. RBS is majority owned by the UK government, and the raising level of auditors and regulators is staggering. Morale is low, as positions are being taken back east, or to India.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep the lines of communication open. It is good to receive communication from that perspective.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you work hard, people will notice you and give you more responsibility to grow your career. Based pay are at market and great PTO policy. It is very hard to find another place with better PTO policy.

    Cons

Bonus is limited by British Government (bad business combination when you are controlled by government). No communication between departments. Work in Solo. No horizontal movement to other department after reaching VP level.

    Advice to Management

Allow more horizontal movement between department and raise base pay to compensate bonus restriction. Breakdown departmental solo and allow department to work together to create synergy.

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There's a lot of work to be done to put the business back on track, so there are plenty of opportunities for personal growth/development. Leadership is strong in certain areas.

    Cons

Lots of uncertainty for the future of the business. Press indicates significant downsizing is possible. Has been subject of negative press for the last 5 years and will no doubt be the subject of negative press for years to come. Hard company to be proud of working for.

    Advice to Management

Every year it feels like the strategy is changing - make significant changes and get it right, instead of lots of small strategic shifts that have little/no overall impact.
