I worked at Russell Reynolds for more than 3 years

    Pros

Interesting projects, smart colleagues, continuous improvement mindset. Being able to work with top executives.

    Cons

Different job categories treated very differently, consultants are the kings, researchers, knowledge specialists and assistants not really cared for. Ways of working depend lot on the office, and project team. Knowledge sharing and management not on the level they should be, due to internal competition. Workload not planned and proactively managed, can be heavy. Big egos among consultants and researchers, quite hierarchical....

    Advice to Management

Researchers and assistants run the show, they should be given the credit they deserve. Incentives put on knowledge sharing.

I worked at Russell Reynolds full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great place to learn executive search from some of the best in the business. Exposure to the most senior business leaders in the world.

    Cons

Not a lot of formal career development. It is a bit of a sink or swim/up or out culture. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it is something that should be understood.

    Advice to Management

I have no complaints about the firm's management. It is a great firm with solid leadership.

    I worked at Russell Reynolds

    Pros

-deep knowledge gained for the practice you work in (Consumer, Industrial, Nonprofit, etc) -down-to-earth people were genuinely fun to work with -excellent knowledge sharing and intra-firm communication

    Cons

-Recruiters and Partners are the real business generators, so career advancement is tough when starting in research as an associate or consultant

    Advice to Management

-don't hesitate to solicit feedback from researchers on the way searches were handled, particularly ones in which the client was less-than-satisfied (which is rare, however)

  8. "Good firm. Career progression like any other large firm - based on billings"

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at Russell Reynolds

    Pros

RRA has some of the better search consultants of the larger firms. It is very client focused. There is flexibility, to the degree any professional services firm has, for balancing your personal live. The brand opens doors and is respected.

    Cons

It's not a progressively minded firm. It's a search firm, and only a search firm. At the end of the day, the real career progression is based on billings. And as with other larger firms, the more you bill, the more your behavior is tolerated. Candidate development team members are not as valued as billers, which is interesting considering the businesses focus.

    Advice to Management

Think more progressively about your service offerings. Clients needs, even at the most senior level, are changing.

I have been working at Russell Reynolds full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice offices People from different backgrounds with varied industry experience Very international firm so often interacting with people allover the world Access to lots of resources Training is improving Talks with external speakers are interesting Some good social opportunities Things move and change quickly Lots of work available with impressive client Brand recognition

    Cons

Confusion about seniority levels within the firm Inconsistency/lack of cohesion High turnover Limited genuine opportunities to travel internationally Very heavy delegation culture - people at different levels will desperately try and make you do their work and publicly take credit for it - quite common across levels, and geographies, not just isolated incidents. This is just a regular part of interactions. Everyone...

I have been working at Russell Reynolds full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Brand Reach Platform Offices/Infrastructure Lucrative rewards Candidate access Client access Better than your average Joe search firm

    Cons

Aggressive political culture Fiefdoms Slap dash work Inconsistent quality Lack of respect for non MD employees Narcissism Complete lack of management. Successful consultants, most with no management skills, placed into positions of leadership. Illusions of grandeur, the business thinks it's Goldman Sachs or McKinsey. It's not.

    Advice to Management

A once superb collaborative culture was destroyed by the prior CEO who rewarded and promoted aggressive and selfish behaviour. Therefore you now must think longer-term rather than continuing to be revenue focused transactors. New CEO good, can he really change the toxic culture that has been created? Rid yourself of those that are mediocre, play politics and work the system to survive with one or two client relationships,...
