    No Union

    Product innovation
    Uniforms

Overall good place to work and retire. Good training in my department because our manager recognized that there really is no school that teaches paint making. Made life-long friends. As at any place, tensions run high but generally everyone worked together. Incompetent supervisors eventually went away.

    Cons

Long hours (12 hour days plus overtime). It was, for so many years, the perfect place to work with 3 shifts and some weekends of OT, but when it went to 12 hours it became hard. 12 hrs in such a harsh chemical environment can affect health and morale.

    Advice to Management

Management overall was good to me, no complaints.

    I worked at Rust-Oleum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay , good insurance, fairly stable work environment

    Cons

Poorly managed company at plant level , most employees are treated like a number not a person. 12 hour shifts means lots of overtime usual mandatory. Hard to get hired permanently because they use temps like a throwaway item. Some temps worked for 3 years and never got hired. Not the cleanest or healthiest air in plant.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the family values the Ferguson's ran the company with.

    I worked at Rust-Oleum full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Family atmosphere; for a $1B company, it has a smaller company feel. Lots of nice perks including coffee bar, summer hours, jeans days, company picnic, chili cookoffs, cubicle mini golf tournaments, etc. The majority of people here are friendly and genuinely nice. Company has been on a positive trajectory for growth, which has resulted in nice bonuses for those eligible.

    Cons

Company is a bit short-sided on consumer insights -- they don't want to spend money on research, as "they know the consumer the best". Company does not plan longer than 3 years out -- strategic planning is a bit "flying by the seat of our pants". Sr Management prides the company on speed (i.e. we're always moving a million miles an hour, all the time), but constant fire drills either cause disastrous high speed collisions or processes to grind to a halt. Sales reps do not plan their work well, and their lack of planning often causes other functions to scramble to meet unrealistic deadlines as a result. Poor succession planning causes good employees to rot away in position vs being rewarded with promotions. Political atmosphere -- if you're not in the in-crowd, be prepared to be overworked and under-recognized for it. Borderline harassment toward attractive female employees happens regularly. Company is quickly outgrowing the building, but they're insistent on squeezing everyone into it at all costs.

    Advice to Management

Recognize your top performers and incentivize them appropriately. Consumer insights are crucial for your business -- don't cut corners here. You're growing rapidly and you need a bigger building. Constantly reconfiguring the inside every 6 months is foolish and costly. Sell 11 Hawthorn and buy/lease something bigger to fit everyone comfortably. Think longer term.

    I worked at Rust-Oleum full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, lots of vacation time, the company as whole means well! Lots of volunteer opportunities for the communities.

    Cons

Well, people who are in management positions shouldn't be, they are not knowledgeable and expect too much from employees. The only way to get ahead in this company is to either know someone or completely suck at your job. It's a shame that the higher ups are blind to this. Hard work definitely goes unnoticed. Workloads are completely unfair, they take advantage of people who can handle more than one thing at a time, and find it acceptable or even praise the people who are barely able to complete the job they were given! I had tried to leave on a good note but my "supervisor" made that incredibly hard with her nasty attitude. Also waited until my last day to ask for help training her, should she have already known how to do my job since she was my boss?

    Advice to Management

Upper management should fire all "supervisors/ department managers" Because they don't know what they are doing and they will eventually chase out all of the good employees the company has.
