I worked at Rutan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

great longevity incentives and the management knows how to keep their employees happy. top notch attorneys and staff.

    Cons

not much of anything bad to say. perhaps giving more recognition where appropriate

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Rutan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some fine lawyers and the staff is very nice. They are centrally located and near South Coast Plaza and many shops.

    Cons

They are very decentralized. It is like practicing law with hundreds of individuals rather than a firm. It is very dog eat dog.

    Advice to Management

Stronger centralized management is needed. Individual attorneys cannot be allowed to do their own thing. The firm needs to decide what clients it wants to pursue rather than leaving that up to each attorney.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Rutan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ok salary, not great but not terrible.

    Cons

Abusive attorneys, constant office political wrangling and absolutely NO work/life balance for non attorneys.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest a full review from an outside consultant of ALL management activities and decisions. Your current management style is driving out good people, including staff.

I worked at Rutan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Well stocked coffee areas
    Little to no micromanagement
Business casual dress code, jeans day every Friday

    Cons

    No work/life balance
    Zero communication from the top
    Archaic policies and management
    Extremely expensive benefits
No growth potential or career path
    Random terminations without just cause

    Advice to Management

Most people here are either not able to think outside the box or are just coming to work each day to collect a paycheck. There are many long term employees but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. In recent years, a few very good employees have been let go for ridiculous reasons, people that were essential workers and great assets to the firm. There have also been essential losses in the attorney staff as well in recent years. Completely depleted corporate, labor and employment and many losses in the trial departments. If you want a place to just show up and sit at your desk all day long this might be for you. If you want a progressive thinking company look elsewhere. Another reviewer mentioned that there are great longevity incentives. This is not true, in fact those have been almost completely eliminated or reduced so much that they are insulting. There will be a mass exodus in the near future. I would doubt this firm will grow or might even collapse. The main gripe is a complete lack of communication from your boss or anyone else. You will only hear of the things that are "wrong" when you're on your way out the door.

    I worked at Rutan full-time

    Pros

Progressive culture in terms of treatment of employees. Friendly, generally happy environment. Rated one of the best places to work in Orange County.

    Cons

Your experience can really depend on who you work for and with. Different departments and attorneys will all come with very different attitudes and levels of morale.
