      Pros

Pays much better than an average university for sessional teaching. There is a part time Lecturer union which has fought for improvements to pay and increases based on how long you have been teaching. Students are bright and engaged. High quality education at the state level which means that you're working with a diverse group of students. Wonderful colleagues and events on campus.

      Cons

Like most universities sessional teaching is inconsistent. Departments rely on us and graduate students in order to run their department but there is no commitment to us as permanent employees. Some positive diversity shifts in the department I work in but across the board this needs to be worked on my the university especially in Senior Management roles.

      Pros

Depending on which courses you teach and who you work with, it can be a smooth experience or a disaster.

      Cons

The pay for part time lecturers is abysmal, and offers no benefits or promise of continuing employment from semester to semester.

      Kafkaesque

      Pros

Colleagues are very nice. It's easy to get there by public transit. Parking passes are very cheap (but traffic is a nightmare, so use the train!) Per course pay is decent compared to other universities. Most importantly, you have union representation. You will need it.

      Cons

Everything about working here is a bureaucratic mess. You have to re-submit your entire job application every semester. They need your availability nearly a year in advance. They won't give you multiple sections of the same course in the same semester. Course Directors drag you in for constant, pointless meetings and micromanage your teaching. If you try to apply for tuition remission (which is a guaranteed element of your compensation in the contract) they will make you wait many months, reject the application, and make you go to the union to receive compensation. Office space is a joke (a closet with two desks shared by dozens of PTLs with a sign up sheet for desk time taped on the door). Classroom tech is often broken or missing. Like most universities, there is virtually zero opportunity to move from part-time to full-time work.

Student Worker at Rutgers University (Specifically TV Studio)

      May 7, 2020 - Production Assistant

      Pros

The studio is very conscious of student's school schedule, so as long as there is clear communication, there should be no conflicts with that. Additionally, it is a great learning experience as all the part-time and full-time workers love to share their knowledge and are always helpful when it comes to asking for help.

      Cons

For anyone without a car or able to use an uber, the Rutgers bus system can be hard to get used to and inconvenient at times, but far from being unusable.
