I have been working at Ryder System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large established company that won't go out of business. First tier managers worry more about themselves and covering their own butts than getting their people's backs.

    Cons

Inside Sales viewed as necessary evil compared to outside sales. Internal customers harder to work with and collaborate than outside customers.

    Advice to Management

Put managers into management. Not just people that were good as Account managers. Very PC. Lighten up.

I have been working at Ryder System full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The first 4 years were ok. Pay was ok, benefits were just ok . Nothing was really bad, but it wasn't super great. The drivers are great and seem to really care about their job.

    Cons

Pay started off alright but now I'm working constantly(24/7 and even on "vacation") and not being compensated. I'm being asked to preform job duties well out of my scope and not being compensated with management telling me I have to have established myself in the higher roll before I can be compensated for it. Benefits are great if you're not sick.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget the guys doing all the work

I worked at Ryder System full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great and considered as family.
Lots of internal training at every level for almost everything.
    Promotions within company
    Good Benefits and insurance
Pay is not too bad for all things considered

    Cons

Service Managers don't all treat their mechanics right and don't take care of them, only care about their own numbers for their bonus
    Management not always trained properly
Don't take care of the long time seniority mechanics
Fire too many good long time mechanics and drivers for stupid things that usually come from improper/lack of training

    Advice to Management

Take better care of the mechanics which are the heart & soul of this company, don't be so quick to terminate over things that could fixed and do more family fun events for shop employees and their families

I worked at Ryder System as a contractor

    Pros

    Nice building and cafeteria
Employees have positive attitudes and are very "Pro-Ryder"
    It's a Fortune 500 company

    Cons

Favoritism and lots of politics. My team was staffed with "friends" of the QA team lead.

Inadequate Training. There was no clear cut plan on how to build my knowledge on the product

Lack of Communication. There was never any notification when something was occurring that would impact me. I would find out after the fact.

    Advice to Management

Train your resources. Put people in leadership positions who know how to lead, not because they worked there for a long time.

I worked at Ryder System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a Rental Sales Rep, you an earn a lot of overtime every week. It makes a difference in your checks.

    Cons

Management will force you to never say no to customers even if you do not have inventory. They expect trucks to magically appear. You will have to deal with angry customers who you accepted a reservation for with out having inventory.

    Advice to Management

Give employees who have been with the company a chance for promotion instead of promoting employees who have been with the company 6 months or less.

I have been working at Ryder System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pretty laid back place. Nice facilities and lots of time off due to plant shut downs and holidays. Decent café food too that serves breakfast and lunch.

    Cons

You have to be a favourite to get promoted. If you are good at your job, they keep you in the same position for years. If you suck at your job, you'll get promoted. It makes no sense but I've watched it happen a dozen times in the last 18 months.

    Advice to Management

Reward those of us who actually work hard and keep your accounts running. Stop promoting people who literally suck at their jobs.

I worked at Ryder System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The inside sales jobs are an easy job. The pay is average. Ryder is a well established company that has been an industry leader since 1932.

    Cons

Poor morale. Worse management in the inside sales group. Very high school like in style. Prone to layoffs every time the stock goes down. Very political.

    Advice to Management

    Improve the morale.

I worked at Ryder System as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Challenging job, definitely room for growth

    Cons

Lots of favortism, if you weren't kissing butt, you weren't acknowledged. This created a frustrated and stressed team environment where newcomers weren't always given help.

    Advice to Management

This isn't high school, so don't create and foster a immature environment by picking and choosing who you communicate with effectively. Also, focus on better training for those who continually ask to learn more. what's the point of having a training dept if you're not using it?!
