I have been working at Ryder System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The potential to move higher in the company is strong with Ryder. I went from driver to Certified Driver Trainer (CDT), and have been asked to move up to a loader - I declined, as I like the driving.

    Cons

Need better management at the shop level: too many shop's seem to be just "getting by." There's a checklist of items the fuel techs are supposed to check, along with cleaning the windows, but 98% of the time they only fuel the truck. Nicer equipment would be a huge plus. Better management at account level; as it seems where I work, if you bring up a problem to your superior, it goes unnoticed. We have a huge problem with drivers not cleaning out their trash, but even when drivers complain, nothing gets done about it. Assigned tractors would be a great way to obliviate the problem drivers - the ones that trash put a truck, then get a different one next shift; or the guy's that choose a tractor based on how much fuel is in it - there have been many days I fuel every day of the week, because, presumably, "they" didn't feel like doing it.

    Advice to Management

Grow a pair, and pass down some rules; rules that stick, just saying them in a safety meeting, but not backing it up does absolutely no good.

    Pros

    Profit Sharing
    401K
    Yearly Bonus
    Spread through the US
    Decent Health Benefits

    Cons

Loose most SCS accounts prior to the end of the contract
    Lack of management on site
Claim to promote diversity for Women in Management roles but they do not
HR services has a lack of interest in people

    Advice to Management

Engineer and price out new accounts accordingly - be realistic and don't bid just to get the business - it only fails in the long run.

In troubled sites, make sure senior management is involved and takes responsibility for the site - don't use lower management and have them take the fall with the customer.

I worked at Ryder System full-time

    Pros

Strong company that embraces diversity in thinking and encourages new ideas and continuous improvement from employees.

    Cons

Work/Life Balance is difficult to achieve. Departments commit to work without proper people resources to fulfill commitments, within timeframes. Causing overextension of workforce.

    Advice to Management

As vacation time does not rollover; employees should be supported to use the little vacation time they have - instead of being considered a strain if they opt to use vacation time. Rested employees are happy employees!
