I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I was employed at Groves & Co. (formally S. Russell Groves Architect) for a year and a half and my experience was nothing like what is described in the reviews below. If you are looking to learn the ins and outs of the industry, I can't imagine a better place to work. The principal and director are seasoned vets; the amount of information you can learn from them if you are willing to work hard is reason enough to...

    Cons

None; my experience with the company and its employees was pleasant and I learned an immeasurable amount about the industry from working here.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work!

I have been working at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good projects and nice people to work with. The best thing is the summer Fridays. Ruso and Pamela, the studio directors, are great to work with and they will help you to progress in your career

    Cons

Long hours, Russell is not the easiest person to deal with

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time

    Pros

Nothing good comes out of this place.

    Cons

Horrible management, directors and owner only care about themselves and their paycheck! No matter how hard and well your work performance is, they are very easy to fire you to replace you with a new hire if you attempt to request a pay raise for your good performance. They expect you to work 10 hour days and weekends. It is a revolving door. People come and go on an average of 4 months.

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting projects, nice office space with views of the Hudson, nice people, well-structured system to control and execute design ideas of the sole principal.

    Cons

Serious management issues, no space for growth. Highest turnover rate in the industry. One sole principal, two middle-management two steps below, and the rest is fresh out of school staff. Lasting a year or more could actually become a hindrance. Zero mentorship.

    Advice to Management

For a healthy business, build a company with various layers of experience, knowledge and perspectives. Respect.

    "Candid and Honest Review"

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect

    Pros

This is a very candid and honest review of SRG (Groves & Co.) from an employee who was intimately familiar with all aspects of the company for over two years. The other negative reviews are half-hearted at best, vindictive and exaggerated at worst. The first thing to remember is that the name S. Russell Groves carries clout, whether that be good or bad, it is a firm with an established reputation in the New York design...

I have been working at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working here has allowed me to expand my creativity as an interior designer. S. Russell Groves is an innovative architecture and design firm with an abundance of talent. The environment is youthful, but very professional. There is much collaboration between employees, which is one of my favorite aspects of the studio. The Directors and senior leadership really take the time with the junior staff to ensure that they understand...

    Cons

The environment can be very stressful at times, especially as presentation deadlines loom, but that comes with the territory. The dogs were cute but…not for me.

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The company provided a decent salary and took in somewhat important clients. Co-workers seemed like amazing people, but were sucked into a totalitarian, toxic work environment.

    Cons

While working at Russell Groves provided me with a decent salary, I can't help but feel overwhelmed by the amount of condescending communication and lack of human empathy. The company seems to rely on its strict hierarchy where the directors and founder are treated like royalty at the expense of the employees happiness. My struggle with depression was re-ignited and ultimately drove me to terminate my position as I...

    Advice to Management

I hope that this office recognizes the downfall of fostering an environment that makes its employees feel bad about themselves. It was truly heartbreaking leaving this place because I identified and empathized with a lot of workers that were taken advantage of both emotionally and professionally.

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect full-time

    Pros

The other junior designers are great people looking to cut their teeth in the NYC design market so happy hour is always fun. Summer Fridays were always nice.

    Cons

They usually hire inexperienced junior designers and then proceed to take advantage of them and treat them terribly. Russell is known for saying "People are replaceable". The salary is usually very low even for more experienced designers/project managers, who they still refer to as junior. Typically everyone would work between 55-65 hours per week. If you do work there, I don't recommend staying there for more than a...

I worked at S. Russell Groves Architect for less than a year

    Pros

Well-known firm that looks good on the resume. Very nice office space, barring the materials library

    Cons

I interned at this firm several years ago and it was by far the worst internship I ever had. I never opened CAD once. My duties consisted of: vacuuming the conference room carpet before meetings, picking up dog poop, taking sticky tac off the back of art, arranging vases in size order, bringing things to the UPS office... Really. I didn't learn a thing and was treated more like a free messenger. I'm also 90% certain...
