I worked at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Health Care, Child care and perks are nice

    Cons

As the employees mature, they are being replaced by younger cheaper to insure replacements. This happens everywhere not just at SAS. But SAS needs to be honest with those they want to leave as to why.

    Advice to Management

Make sure your middle managers are not a part of the problems SAS has. Look at the excesses that are all around.

I worked at SAS Institute as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Super stress-free environment
    - Lots of good, knowledgeable, and interesting people to work with
    - Lunch is awesome with all the different cafeterias
    - Intern and company events were decent

    Cons

    - Didn't really push me to excel
    - Code base is huge so figuring out how to do something requires asking numerous people how they built it first or just tracing through an unknown architecture for a while
    - I was told to accept an internship extension through the school year as a way they could transition me to full time. I expressed how I may not be able to put in any hours because of school and hesitantly accepted it after a while when they said it was okay. Unsurprisingly I was unable to put in hours during my next 2 semesters and that led to getting called and told I was not going to be extended a full time offer after 2 summer internships with them

Not a place for the mid-career as the growth potential is slower than expected.

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most departments have a very realistic attitude about work vs. life. Medical, gym, pool, cafeterias all available on a beautifully manicured campus decorated with sculpture. Everyone has a private office and there is an ergonomics department that will go to great lengths to make sure your body is comfortable. Vacation is average, pay is average.

    Cons

There is no real career path. Skillsets can be very odd. Older employees (20+ yr veterans) are routinely pushed out of the company due to lack of current skills. Newer hires come in with more current programming skills. There is no scenario in which you would be rewarded for extraordinary effort, or for that matter fired for being a slacker. Most immediate managers are excellent, middle managers are average, upper management is clueless.

    Advice to Management

    Replace yourselves.

I worked at SAS Institute full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people, smart, professional, cooperative. I enjoyed working there quite a bit! SAS works with the best companies in the world so lots of great exposure.

    Cons

Proprietary coding language makes it difficult to stay modern and attract new talent. After six full years, I began to feel stagnant both career wise and technologically.

    Advice to Management

More focus on career path and career development

    Pros

Great private innovative company to work for.

    Cons

Hard to move up the ladder.

    Advice to Management

Great job with the progress of the company in terms of the innovative products and its benefits for the society and also for creating a company that grows on you with time.
Dont play favoritism to certain employees just because they are your family or close friends but judge them with their work and sincerity.

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Caring coworkers. Good benefits if you have a spouse and children. Less so if you are younger. On site cafeterias are delicious. Campus is beautiful.

    Cons

Responsibilities out of whack with job titles. No clear career ladder. Decision making is frustrating - too many people get a say. Conservative culture of consensus.

    Advice to Management

Before making organizational changes, talk to the people on the ground.
