I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits and on-campus perks are nice. Flexible work hours. Good ability to balance family and personal life. Once you're in, it's pretty easy to stay in, if you want to. Generally loose, unstructured management style, in my experience.

    Cons

Pretty strong sense of "entitlement" among employees. There is a bit of a "club" atmosphere at the higher levels, that you're either in or out of. A fair amount of pressure to conform.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to better balance the bimodal distribution of hard-working / high-performers with those willing to coast and just punch the clock.

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, low pressure, good people to work with, long-term view

    Cons

Insular, clubby, inward-looking, not focused on customers, not driven by the market

    Advice to Management

A lot is happening in analytics - don't miss out on it!

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

SAS is consistently ranked near the top of best places to work. This is especially true if you work at corporate HQ in Cary NC.

    Cons

Salary and total comp is lower than you can get elsewhere for a similar role. Very low turnover is both a blessing and a curse as it limits internal opportunities.

I worked at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the greatest places to work all around although there are some terrible people in management who completely take away from the SAS experience.

    Cons

If you have a terrible manager than your entire career is railroaded. There are definitely managers in place that should not be and all that SAS stands for with employee relations and work life balance, etc is 100% useless when one of these monsters is your manager.

    Advice to Management

Keep tighter reigns on your managers. They talk the talk but they certainly do not walk the walk. Hypocrites and phonies, liars who will use completely trashy tactics to get what they want. Not professional whatsoever and nothing but self serving , not SAS serving. Specifically Contracts (from experience)

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Work life balance, benefits like pool, gym and generous vacation.

    Cons

Chances are you might stay to long waiting on management opportunity that will never come. Managers that are good at a discipline but not necessarily good leaders of people. Look after their careers, but don’t worry too much about you.

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work Life balance. This is the place where old software people go to die. In fact, the turnover rate matches the US mortality rate. Coincidence?

    Cons

No new products and those that came out were nightmares

    Advice to Management

Go public so the new owners can clean house.

I worked at SAS Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are many smart, nice people. Offices with doors instead of cubicles. Interesting products to work on. Work-life balance was good. Benefits were decent.

    Cons

Your experience at SAS is dependent on which department, product, etc. you work with. In some cases social acumen is more important that professional skill and capability. It's unclear how employee performance is rewarded. The opportunities for advancement are sparse.

    Advice to Management

I don't really have any advice for management.
