I worked at SEEK as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours are pretty lenient as an HR Intern; you learn a lot from the other workers; really great foundation for someone who seeks a HR career in the future.

    Cons

Minimum base bay; sometimes you would find yourself doing nothing; a lot of times you will have to listen at my location the boss would yell at people.

I worked at SEEK full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Treats its employees extremely well in terms of benefits, holiday leave, sick leave etc. Very progressive workplace, has some highly intelligent, driven and passionate people employed there.

    Cons

Extremely poor at communicating throughout the hierarchy of the business as to the direction the company is taking, there appears to be only a very limited correlation between pay and performance (which they were attempting to rectify, but didn't seem to have ironed out). Employees, are large percentage of whom were reasonably young, were given little indication as to how best progress through the business. Some extremely talented and hardworking individuals were left languishing in entry level roles because of the lack of a talent fasttrack scheme. Didn't run a proper graduate scheme/internship scheme, which seemed ridiculous since they were in the business of recruitment.

    Advice to Management

The lack of a talent fasttrack scheme from entry level roles means that the company is losing talented employees who become impatient in their current positions. Employees who offer little or the bare minimum are retained due to lax discipline.

I worked at SEEK (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employee perks - breakfast, car parking (for certain roles staff), ongoing events and socialising, reputable company (largest online global media organisation in employment) and solid training.

    Cons

Cliquey, can be a boys club at times, nepotism, work hard play hard philosophy, high KPI's, poor hires into middle management roles.

I worked at SEEK full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people. Its all about the people - having to work with awesome, fun, happy, smart, innovative people who care about each other.
Good perks like breakfast, friday drinks, lunches etc

    Cons

Growing in Product and IT and chasing the competition so fast its forgetting the service side.
Bringing in all new management and losing the existing culture. Not promoting from an awesome pool of existing people, and giving them to opportunity to stretch.
Only focusing on the revenue and dropping people and client initiatives to chase numbers.

    Advice to Management

Don's bring in new management for all senior roles, you will lose the great people you have.

I have been working at SEEK as a contractor

    Pros

Talented co-workers active in conf scene, always something new to learn given large variety of tech stacks and teams are always willing to adopt new tech, management leave tech decisions to engineers, teams get to choose dev process.

    Cons

A bit too PC, too many/not enough beards, st kilda rd has exactly 5 places to eat, contractors don't get invited to events.

    Advice to Management

Be less PC, reduce/increase beard count, open an 8 bit burger on st kilda rd, invite me to events.

I worked at SEEK as a contractor

    Pros

Undoubtedly it was the quality of the people at Seek that made my time there such a memorable experience. There was a unique blend of intelligence, empathy and irreverence that seemed to permeate throughout the place. This generated a culture of performance, trust and respect while at the same time 'taking the ...' The calibre of leaders I got to work with and shadow was exceptional and my learning was exponential. Colleagues became friends organically and this had a lot to do with the agile and collaborative initiatives right across the company. The organisation's commitment to hiring good people was championed consistently by leaders and team members alike. And while a values based culture may have become more homogenous these days, Seek really was a pioneer in its commitment to protecting culture and genuinely prioritising engagement and the welfare of its peeps.

    Cons

I had challenges in handling the company's accelerated growth at the time. Administration support for my role was minimal and combined with an antiquated HRIS, this created a lot of inefficiency. While the company was committed to providing several fun and team based initiatives and celebrations, the practicality of work life balance was difficult to maintain personally. I understand that a number of these challenges have been addressed in the years since.

    Advice to Management

As organisations grow and diversify it becomes harder to directly influence culture. Stay true to the values that have enabled your success. They will help to create uniformity. Thank you for enabling me to be a part of the Seek journey.
