    Pros

Smart driven colleagues who are dedicated to the cause of social justice and rights at work. Learn a lot right away as a researcher.

    Cons

Barbell effect where there's a lot of management and a lot of junior staff. It's difficult to be in the middle so a lot of people leave after a few years.

    Advice to Management

It's important to keep staff 5-7 years in so there needs to be more opportunities for advancement or for tenured staff to develop their own ideas.

    Pros

Great introduction to the labor movement, membership is an inspiration, you get to work on some very interesting projects and your co workers are generally interesting people.

    Cons

labor movement politics are basically petty and ridiculous. if you find many "democratic" organizations (any by many I do mean MANY) fighting over 8% total "market share" just plain silly - you may want to find a different non profit job or go into the private sector

    Pros

SEIU is a great place to work. But like any large organization there are lots of internal politics which often affect the work that gets done - or fails to get done. As well as the decision making when it comes to making political decisions that affect the union as a whole.

Working with the members is the best part.

    Cons

Def a lot of long hours and plenty of travel depending on where you are work. Sometimes, change within the union is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time building up quality managers from within the union. At the same time, should not be afraid to hire high quality people who come form outside the world of labor.
