I worked at SEIU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great mission, really great benefits. I never had any complaints about my job or SEIU as an employer. Although my job was pretty basic, I appreciated that my office job played a part in supporting SEIU's members.

    Cons

The office culture was not great. Working in Operations, our department was often treated like we didn't understand the organization's mission, because we didn't work in the field. My coworkers and I often felt like that was a real morale-buster. There was work to promote department cohesion/teamwork, but not to promote inter-departmental fraternization at our Local. Promotions sometimes seemed based more on commitment to the leaders of the union/local, rather than commitment to the job or work output. Flextime was very difficult to get approved.

    Advice to Management

Promote people because they work hard and do the best work, not because they've been there the longest or have proven their loyalty.

    Pros

involved in the important issues for working people - from low-wage janitors and fast food workers to doctors and professors.

    Cons

Since it is run democratically, it is the officers and the members who make the final decisions, which is complicated for staff to understand.

    Advice to Management

Managers should hold managers accountable as well as non-managers

I worked at SEIU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

For people who care about empowering working people and re-structuring our economy to benefit all people, not just the wealthy elite, SEIU is a great place to work.

    Cons

The management culture at SEIU is such that fealty to leaders is most often valued over competence / fitness for purpose.

    Working for a progressive organization

    Cons

Many of my quantitative research skills were not used
Some of the work is boring/ not challenging
I'd often work on projects that ended up being scrapped
Not enough advancement opportunity due to lack of senior researcher positions

I have been working at SEIU full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fighting to make real change in workers lives and improve Healthcare in our communities. Supportive and caring executive team. The members are amazing and their stories are inspirational.

    Cons

At one point I was an OIT for International. That job was pure hell. If you decide to do it know that it is SEIU'S temporary worker program. You will get to see the country which is awesome but you will have no life work balance, you will be treated as dispensabe and ultimately you will be.working at a local, depending on which one is extremely different (depending on which one). The only complaint I would have about my local is workload. 1500 members is toone many.

    Advice to Management

Look at workload and make somechanges, not only for organizers but also for the sake of members.

I worked at SEIU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I felt the benefits were great, I agree with the union values as well

    Cons

Pay is low in this field, but work life balance was terrific so worthwhile to me.

    Advice to Management

Try to treat people more consistently. Elected officials means senior management can change every few years, a little scary for employees.

    Pros

The culture of the employees at SEIU is great, coworkers help create a positive environment as well as the management being extremely respectful.

    Cons

Certain higher-level employees have little to no consideration for lower tier employees effort and will treat them as if they have no value.
