pay could be better. after a year still not much raise. Good Tech leaves after a year or two. You have to train new people all over again.

I have been working at SGS (More than a year)

    Pros

    -Flex Time
    -Friendly co-workers
    -Flexible work schedule

    Cons

    -No growth
-Responsibility is always you, never the analyst
-Petty things will haunt you, don't make a mistake

    Advice to Management

Tone, posture, and eye contact is often overlooked. Employees are not a punching bag, treat them the way you would like to be treated. Management needs to take training classes. No room to change.

I have been working at SGS as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent opportunity for OT, that's the only way to make any real money.
Paid lunch, when you make time for it.

    Cons

They are very procedure oriented except when it comes to pay increases or promotions, then they just wing it.
No real bonuses or incentives whatsoever.
Knowing and doing you job well isn't enough to get noticed, reporting others will get you promoted the fastest as well as being buddy buddy with the SGS supervisors.
They focus alot on safety but none on what to do if an emergency does occur.
    No holidays off.
Holiday pay is 8 hours even though a work day is 12 and if you work on that day you still only get paid regular wages, not holiday pay.
Paid vacation is 8 hours per day, not 12 like your scheduled work day.
You're always on call, you will always be wondErin if you might get called in.
Night shift does not get paid any more than being on day shft.
PPE and personal storage for PPE is pathetic. You'll have to beg for new contact gloves unless you want to use thick leather gloves that you can't do anything with. We work with plastic bags, paperwork, and metal zip ties, you cannot handle any of that with gloves on which is required. The assigned lockers aren't large enough to store all of the required PPE.
As a contractor you do not get the same paid holidays or bonuses as the employees of the company you are working with. Think bare minimum.
OSHA says that required PPE is to be provided at no cost by the employer but SGS only gives and allowance to help pay for half the cost of one pair of work boots per year, up to $75. Your boots will wear out in 4-6 months on the rocks used on the railroad tracks and you're stuck footing the bill for a new pair after that until the next anniversary of your start date.

    Advice to Management

Check what your supervisors know about their job before hiring them. It's embarrassing to know more in 6 months than the head company guy on site.
Have Calvin show you how to do the job you pay him to hire others to do. A man lost his fingers and he doesn't even know what the man's job to do is in the first place or how to do it.
Stop being greedy. Offer incentives and actual bonuses that will lower the turnaround rate of employees. You preach about safety but nobody feels safe when you have to learn to work with new faces every other week because the pay is so far below average for the job description and work environment.

I worked at SGS full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people with whom you work are always a pro in my opinion. A laboratory position with this company should be seen for what it it: skills building to a better job or a temporary move to hold you over until a better opportunity opens.

    Cons

The division in which I worked (Upstream) left almost no personal time; between my hire date in June 2015 through Labor Day, I had 9 days off. Overtime was outrageous but expected by management. This may be a plus for some but I value my personal time much higher than what SGS was paying me to prioritize their needs. Vacation time would rarely be approved by management due to workload prioritization which led to the majority (~75%) of employee vacation time being lost (SGS doesn't compensate or roll over unused vacation time). Unacceptable!

    Advice to Management

Solutions were in lab optimization, not necessarily to hire another warm body. Networking of the lab, training, repair of equipment, and adding operating shifts could easily remedy the excessive hours issues in this lab. Also some time spent in the lab listening to all four analysts issues by management could have gone a long way to showing some degree of care.

I worked at SGS full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great learning environment, great people, beautiful facilities (where they have spent the money for it), and reasonable benefits. Sometimes good, bigly good.

    Cons

Constant turnover due to low pay for high performers. Demoralizing goals from Geneva make it obvious they don't care about employees. Complete disconnect between business line local leadership and global leadership. Idiotic and wasteful sales and marketing system. No foresight regarding direction of the business/industry, future planning, etc.

    Advice to Management

Learn the businesses that report to you and listen to people who know more than you (that's what you pay them for). Invest in your employees and your future.

    Advice to Management

Include field staff same as inside staff. Provide incentives for good productivity

I have been working at SGS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits for health and life insurance

    Cons

No work available and supervisors don't care. 50 people are sitting at home and they don't answer the phone and if they do they just say there isn't any contracts available so there is high turnover and they act like they can't understand it. They are getting paid and they don't care that the employees that actually do the work aren't getting paid. They promise they are setting up training for advancement in the company. That is always cancelled too. It is a no win situation.

    Advice to Management

Employees can't work a couple months out of the year and be happy and able to support their families. At least act like you are concerned about your employees and make an attempt to keep them working.

I worked at SGS (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Supervisors at some sites, First location i worked at was great and I advanced quickly

    Cons

Some sites are terrible so its luck of the draw as to whether you end up in a good place or not.

    Advice to Management

Supervise your foreman and supervisors more diligently, just because they have been somewhere a long time doesn't mean they have any leadership capabilities.

    Pros

Huge company, many locations, most people friendly

    Cons

Do not keep promises made. Will tell you what you want to hear but will not follow through. Management is fluid with many changes. Raises almost nonexistent and work load unrealistic for what they want done

    Advice to Management

Get your act together with management and their promises
