I worked at SL Green Realty full-time

    Pros

Reputable public company within the industry, wide opportunity to see many things, central Midtown location.

    Cons

    - Extreme lack of communication from management and between departments. Expectations and goals are not clear or concise. Processes are scrambled across departments leaving the staff to put the puzzle back together, which leads to

    - Poor company culture. The mentality is always; I need this done now or why isn't this already done? with no forewarning or set expectation. Not a great culture to learn. This leads to

    - Poor morale and high turnover. The long hours and lack of communication have caused some departments to lose over half the staff in less than a year. Pushes work to the few who remain.

    - The above is fine if properly compensated or evaluated. But the company stresses their "lean" operations, which is simply a crutch to underpay or fire employees as a cost control tactic.

    - The below comments on sexism or favoritism is not shocking based on the environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop viewing employees as costs and machines...treat them as people and with respect and they will be more loyal to the company. Remove or train up some of the underperforming departments or managers. Put some effort to care about the work employees put in.

    Pros

    Great starting salary and benefits.

    Cons

It takes 5 years to get more than 2 weeks vacation and some days can be painfully boring.

I have been working at SL Green Realty full-time

    Pros

The company has well known name in real estate in New York and has a centrally located office in midtown

    Cons

High turnover. Low pay. Low morale.

Agree with the comments and other reviews about favoritism and sexism. It is really lean organization and employees suffer because the hours are long and they are always understaffed.

It’s run like a small company and doesn’t seem like a SP500 company.

    Managers need training.

    Advice to Management

    Change

    Pros

Excellent pay, good team, good team leadership. Great parties, good central location. Exposure to loads of technology stacks, excellent work experience. Good face time with SVP, helps build all round projects and sets direction for the team. SVP is deeply invested and cares for team members and in the team's future.

    Cons

Not many, excellent to build your technology career at all stages from the junior most to senior levels. May need you to invest in long hours to grow quickly, but that is typical in any technology company.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in technology, it will pay in the long run.

I worked at SL Green Realty full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There's a few really talented members of the team that were great mentors.

    Cons

If you're looking at this role, be aware that this role is no where near as technical as it's made out to be in the interview.

Work/Life Balance - Basically non existent. You're expected to be on call 24/7, be regularly updating tickets on nights and weekends, as well as being available for overtime everyday. While the expectation of any IT job is to be ready to put in extra hours, the expectation here leaves no time for any sort of balance. Every team meeting, the VP stated that the team needs to clear any upcoming plans outside of business hours, in order to be on stand by or to be on site. This became a regular demand, not a request. On top of this, vacation requests were routinely denied, with reasons cited that go against the company time off policy. It is frowned upon if you're not basically living from your desk.

Leadership - The leadership of the Information Technologies is non-existent. There are some serious communication issues that are not being addressed, and in the span of 1 1/2 years, 4 members of the Information Technologies team have chosen to resign. There is a clear lack of management experience in this department.

There is no room for professional growth and there is no room for promotions within this department.

    Advice to Management

Either hire new management completely, or submit the current team to intensive management and communication training. There is a clear lack of managerial experience in the leadership team and the team suffers for it daily. Stop treating your employees as numbers. Pay attention to your turnover rate for employees.

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Opportunity to rise up in ranks depending on individual effort to going above and beyond and/or favoritism.

    Cons

Promotions and employee salaries are strongly correlated with sexism, favoritism and social hierarchy. Employees are treated as disposable. Upper management gets off on criticizing employees' work publicly. This results in high performers doubting their ability and therefore producing a lower quality work.

    Advice to Management

Focus on bigger picture items to benefit the company. Work on building your employees up rather than tearing them down.
