    Pros

Great people who cared about the education market and were excited to come to work.
Significant growth in the company at the time created good opportunity to get exposed to a lot of new ideas.

    Cons

Lack of direction in the company killed innovation. Management became very political and efforts to get things done for customers were outweighed by internal fighting.

    Advice to Management

None, the ship has sailed on this company, its ideas and any hope for the future. Its quite a shame but a company does need more than one product that is easily copied.

    Pros

Seattle office has a great number of intelligent, hard-working, friendly people.
    Good salaries.
Typical free soda, coffee and Costco snacks.

    Cons

The folks in the Calgary Headquarters were difficult to work with. There seemed to be some passive-aggressive behavior as the Calgary folks didn't seem to want to work with the newly opened Seattle office staff. Communication was challenging.
Teams were constantly being changed around as the direction and focus of upper management shifted.
Health insurance plan is not great.

    Pros

You get paid every two weeks and benefits are OK, Medical is expensive for a family.
I still believe in the product, NB and IFP's are where it is at!

    Cons

Sales are down but wait we will:

    Downsize the workforce
Blame the ESM or TM when they(Management) reduce the reseller boots on the ground by 90%
Let Epson sell NB as a loss leader to sell HW
Use SFDC as an inventory tool but with no connection to Oracle
    User list? What user list?
    Backorders on product for weeks
Constant Conference calls in the middle of the week
Too many reports that could be pulled from SFDC
Lack of understanding by upper management because they are never told the truth by middle management
Middle management who needs to go out an actually sell a deal before they criticize you on your selling capabilities
    Training? NONE!
Messaging? Just ask how many times they changed that with pricing around NB 2014 and then asked us to keep up with their stupidity.
Jealous and deceitful RED's who will turn on you as fast as the wind changes directions

    Advice to Management

Fire certain middle managers and an upper executive who is ruining the company.
If they can't present in NB or to an audience then you know who they are.
Neil they are lying to you, dig deep and follow th money

Mismanagement and lack of direction and/or shift of direction is crippling. There are also seems to be divergent sense of urgency in Calgary (no urgency) and other places Seattle (urgent) to bring everyone together.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some really dedicated people. Low level managers, engineers, and other staff are great people and great to work with.

    Cons

Bad culture is completely entrenched. Ultra heavy process that impedes any ability to do good work, despite the best efforts of many front line employees. Upper management is totally clueless, shifts things around without a real strategy in mind. Product development is done in a total vacuum, with no data driving any of the decisions. Features are chosen at random by the CTO, and unsurprisingly most of them fail to resonate with users. Products are low quality and rushed to market because upper management is rolling the dice with reckless abandon. Too many products, not enough culling of unsuccessful products.

Managers are unfortunately thrown into a lions den where they have to play politics instead of helping their team build great products. CEO blames lack of product sales on people going home early, meanwhile some major blunders by upper management go totally unacknowledged.

This company was wildly successful before there was any competition. This success masked a lot of endemic issues. Now that education spending is in the gutter and their bread and butter product has been commoditized, all of the major problems are surfacing.

Multiple attempts at restructuring have been unsuccessful. This company operates like a big ship and cannot turn on a dime.

    Advice to Management

    sell the company

Decrease education spend is reducing the profitability of this company. Too much competition diluting the industry.
