I worked at SMART Technologies (More than a year)

    Pros

Good products and innovation. Some really nice people at home office.

    Cons

Senior leadership lacks direction and ability to keep focused. Education is main business but no one at that level has an Education background. Too many changes too fast without staying on course.

    Advice to Management

Pick your core focus and stay there. Let others into your group.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Seattle office has a great number of intelligent, hard-working, friendly people.
    Good salaries.
Typical free soda, coffee and Costco snacks.

    Cons

The folks in the Calgary Headquarters were difficult to work with. There seemed to be some passive-aggressive behavior as the Calgary folks didn't seem to want to work with the newly opened Seattle office staff. Communication was challenging.
Teams were constantly being changed around as the direction and focus of upper management shifted.
Health insurance plan is not great.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get paid every two weeks and benefits are OK, Medical is expensive for a family.
I still believe in the product, NB and IFP's are where it is at!

    Cons

Sales are down but wait we will:

    Downsize the workforce
Blame the ESM or TM when they(Management) reduce the reseller boots on the ground by 90%
Let Epson sell NB as a loss leader to sell HW
Use SFDC as an inventory tool but with no connection to Oracle
    User list? What user list?
    Backorders on product for weeks
Constant Conference calls in the middle of the week
Too many reports that could be pulled from SFDC
Lack of understanding by upper management because they are never told the truth by middle management
Middle management who needs to go out an actually sell a deal before they criticize you on your selling capabilities
    Training? NONE!
Messaging? Just ask how many times they changed that with pricing around NB 2014 and then asked us to keep up with their stupidity.
Jealous and deceitful RED's who will turn on you as fast as the wind changes directions

    Advice to Management

Fire certain middle managers and an upper executive who is ruining the company.
If they can't present in NB or to an audience then you know who they are.
Neil they are lying to you, dig deep and follow th money

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small company with light workload. Repeat jobs so not much in the way of surprises. Day shift, Monday through Friday. 8-5 with overtime on sixth day is common but on a volenteered basis for the most part.

    Cons

No room for advancement and work became repetitive and boring after the few first month. Internal finger pointing when project does not go well.

    Advice to Management

    Walk the floor more often.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time

    Pros

established, entrepreneurial and progressive organization that carries high energy enthusiasm throughout the organization.

    Cons

Old guard management styles prevent cross organization innovation and collaboration. Significant turnover in the past three years has drained the organization of key knowledge and relationships that are preventing acceleration into new markets.

    Advice to Management

Need to listen to employees regarding product categories and education business.

    Pros

Dedicated individuals at the contributor levels who are passionate about improving education through technology. Previously, senior management was very good at empowering employees to do their best and encouraged and ownership culture.

    Cons

Continued low revenue and recent acquisition driving austerity measures. Lack of cohesive vision leads to product development confusion and inefficiency. Poor understanding of the new age of education technology caused previous costly false starts.

Profitability is job one, leading to poor strategic decisions.

    Advice to Management

Develop a real vision and be accountable for making it happen.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Recent acquisition means money and strength to begin growth again.

Leader in education hardware market. Positioned well to be leader in ed software market.

Strong development teams with a good vision for future of ed market.

Strong, positive culture in Seattle office. Very rare to find the same great talent, energy, teamwork and friendship in any organization.

Strong ops team who understand how to be effective and are doing a great job at finding and rectifying inefficiencies.

    Cons

Sales team and sales leadership is the worst I've seen. They continually miss targets and can't strategize. Excuses, excuses, excuses. I don't know how they get away with it.

Pockets of legacy employees who are too stuck on old ways of doing things and too proud to change things up despite failing continuously.

Marketing is too junior to know what they're doing so they just waste money. Need a complete overhaul - reorganize to actually do marketing and refresh team to build a stronger org.

    Advice to Management

Fire sales leadership - they haven't proven any sales capability or sales leadership. Sales is also where many under-performing employees are hiding - friendship bonds are blinding leaders from making the right business decisions. Employee confidence in the company will continue to be low until this is changed.

What does the training team actually do? Take a look there for improvement opportunities.

With Foxconn build one 1-2 year strategy and stick to it. Changes in strategy, while understandable, have been taxing on company resources and employees. People are craving stability.
