I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Recent acquisition means money and strength to begin growth again.

Leader in education hardware market. Positioned well to be leader in ed software market.

Strong development teams with a good vision for future of ed market.

Strong, positive culture in Seattle office. Very rare to find the same great talent, energy, teamwork and friendship in any organization.

Strong ops team who understand how to be effective and are doing a great job at finding and rectifying inefficiencies.

    Cons

Sales team and sales leadership is the worst I've seen. They continually miss targets and can't strategize. Excuses, excuses, excuses. I don't know how they get away with it.

Pockets of legacy employees who are too stuck on old ways of doing things and too proud to change things up despite failing continuously.

Marketing is too junior to know what they're doing so they just waste money. Need a complete overhaul - reorganize to actually do marketing and refresh team to build a stronger org.

    Advice to Management

Fire sales leadership - they haven't proven any sales capability or sales leadership. Sales is also where many under-performing employees are hiding - friendship bonds are blinding leaders from making the right business decisions. Employee confidence in the company will continue to be low until this is changed.

What does the training team actually do? Take a look there for improvement opportunities.

With Foxconn build one 1-2 year strategy and stick to it. Changes in strategy, while understandable, have been taxing on company resources and employees. People are craving stability.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time

    Pros

The company has some great technology with a great group of people. The latest change in product development has been great with the latest addition of the Seattle offices

    Cons

The company made some poor fiscal decisions during its early years of high growth that they had been battling to recover from

    Advice to Management

Continue to reduce the fiscal liabilities from previous management team and keep on the path of quicker product cycles.

    - the company is quite small and you can be apart of anything you want

    Cons

    - the organization is spread quite thin across all departments and if you need something you need to do it yourself or find it yourself
    - not a top tier company and therefore doesn't have top tier talent

    Advice to Management

look at where the organization is struggling and make changes to fix it

    Pros

Acquisition is probably a good thing long term. Education seems to be finally turning around and Kapp IQ is a very good product.

    Cons

The company has shifted direction multiple times. No clear direction of senior management and terrible decision to get in bed with Microsoft. Regular Kapp was a massive failure.

    Pros

Leaders in education and forward looking in display technology

    Cons

Mismanagement and lack of direction and/or shift of direction is crippling. There are also seems to be divergent sense of urgency in Calgary (no urgency) and other places Seattle (urgent) to bring everyone together.

    Pros

Medical Benefits, Seattle office, Team activities in Seattle.

    Cons

    Micromanagement.
Rush rush all the time with not enough time given for self improvement.
Using a mix of lot of technologies without giving you overview or time to understand the system and leaving you to figure things on your own by digging into the code.
Manager more interested in finding and complaining faults than helping you fix the issues that are causing the problems. No appreciation what so ever.
Felt that preference was given to Calgary team.
    Would not recommend this place.
    No bonuses or raises.

    Advice to Management

Managers need to stop complaining about things that are not done right and appreciate what you have done or put your effort on.
Need to have better on-boarding process.
Having a mentor for new people would be helpful.
Need more interaction between Calgary and Seattle teams.
