    Pros

Great place to be exposed to a lot of new technology and learn, learn, learn. Reasonable salaries, benefits and amenities

    Cons

After acquisition by FoxConn they are going through a phase of cutting expenses and it has led to layoffs. It may be or not be the last such episode.

    Advice to Management

As I take the view that a company is the people that work, I will always advise any management to hold on to their people. This is a high technology company employing people with high qualifications.

I have been working at SMART Technologies full-time

    Pros

I have a good work life balance. I have a manager who cares and wonderful peers. I'm consistently challenged.

    Cons

The pay isn't great and raises and bonuses haven't been given out over the past few years. The benefits aren't that great compared to other companies. They hire a lot from outside instead of promoting from within.

    Advice to Management

Stand behind your people and your decisions. Fight for your team members, they've committed many years and stuck it out as asked.

    Pros

There were very few pros. Perhaps the biggest was the location as far as going for walks at lunch.

    Cons

No long term vision, outsourcing to inept and incompetent company, team dynamics and management, business users

    Pros

Some good co-workers. Others were immature and hostile.

    Cons

Co-workers often were reluctant to share information, including CEO.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so selfish. Have a thought for creating some stability in the company so that employees can focus on their work rather than worrying about whether they will have a job tomorrow.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time

    Pros

-Amount of time off was great
-Really switched on middle management and staff

    Cons

Everything else - the Executive leaders are completely incompetent. When the CEO Neil Gaydon and CTO Warren Barkley took over 4 years ago, everyone was excited to have people who had good looking resumes...that did nothing to help the fortune of the company, in fact I would question those resumes because they are incompetent. Over their time, the share price dropped to a low of 20 cents (the IPO was $17 six years ago), revenues declined, decisions made to get out of certain products/ markets too soon and launching the disastrous kapp board which almost bankrupted the company and was an utter failure, resulted in the company losing focus from improving existing products and innovating. Last I heard, they continue to have jobs. Staff hated them and have no respect for those two, as they treat staff horribly, and under their watch have seen now hundreds of departures. Their mandate was to turn the company around, they sure did but in the wrong direction. Complete failures in their roles.

    Advice to Management

Hide your head in shame - unfortunately they wouldn't take anyone's advice anyways

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

SMART still has a strong presence within education market (though diminishing) and an experienced, global network of value-added resellers.

    Cons

Since Neil Gaydon joined, significant cuts to both the workforce and lack of investment in R&D have resulted in (a) competitors leap-frogging SMART with more innovative solutions, (b) drain of knowledgeable from departing talent and (c) loss of commitment to the SMART brand from both end-users and channel partners.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees working with customers and partners 'IN THE FIELD' who can provide a realistic view of the competitive landscape--not to senior management 'tweaks' information for the purpose of upwards management. Foxconn should definitely look at making changes to the current leadership team who has been unable to demonstrate effective retention and development of talent.
