I worked at SMART Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some really dedicated people. Low level managers, engineers, and other staff are great people and great to work with.

    Cons

Bad culture is completely entrenched. Ultra heavy process that impedes any ability to do good work, despite the best efforts of many front line employees. Upper management is totally clueless, shifts things around without a real strategy in mind. Product development is done in a total vacuum, with no data driving any of the decisions. Features are chosen at random by the CTO, and unsurprisingly most of them fail to resonate with users. Products are low quality and rushed to market because upper management is rolling the dice with reckless abandon. Too many products, not enough culling of unsuccessful products. Managers are unfortunately thrown into a lions den where they have to play politics instead of helping their team build great products. CEO blames lack of product sales on people going home early, meanwhile some major blunders by upper management go totally unacknowledged. This company was wildly successful before there was any competition. This success masked a lot of endemic issues. Now that education spending is in the gutter and their bread and butter product has been commoditized, all of the major problems are surfacing. Multiple attempts at restructuring have been unsuccessful. This company operates like a big ship and cannot turn on a dime.

    Pros

Great people and in the past great products, now only one to carry the company on. Smart is not a Software company,

    Cons

Very heavy bad upper management who think they are still with Microsoft. no loyalty to the employees left and you always have to wonder if your the next one to get the pink slip with there ongoing weekly cuts. Company values ruined and stock now at 89 cents VS 5-7 $

    Advice to Management

AT this point? you will no longer have any sales staff, no loyalty and time for upper management to get their selling suits on, best of Luck to the CEO, He made his money.

I worked at SMART Technologies for more than a year

    Pros

SMART Technologies still has a great product set in 2015. Every Enterprise has a need for some piece of the SMART Collaboration suite. This product set is engaging and fun to sell. Had a really good strategy/partnership with Microsoft for the Lync Room Systems. SMART has hired a lot of pretty strong sales folks that do know how to close business.

    Cons

Poor leadership. It would be more accurate to say that SMART Technologies manages their business with a short runway based on a transactional model. Reactive not proactive approach to selling as a whole. Compensation paid out on a quarterly basis (not monthly) is an outdated model for this product line...this is not Microsoft. Surprisingly poor communications from HQ to the field and yes this is possible even for a collaboration based company. SMART Technologies has a cycle that has been developing where they make sudden layoff decisions every 12-18 months based on how the year's numbers are looking. Until there is a change in upper management history says this will continue.

    Advice to Management

Great products are clearly not enough ensure success. Mission critical to have a step by step quality assurance process that is actually followed. This company can be turned around and could be successful. Your people will be the difference and you must invest in them more than products. Few people want to see upper management run this company any further into the ground. If you do not really listen to your employees on the front line (sales), partners and customers than the market will tell you how you are doing.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Seattle office has a great number of intelligent, hard-working, friendly people. Good salaries. Typical free soda, coffee and Costco snacks.

    Cons

The folks in the Calgary Headquarters were difficult to work with. There seemed to be some passive-aggressive behavior as the Calgary folks didn't seem to want to work with the newly opened Seattle office staff. Communication was challenging. Teams were constantly being changed around as the direction and focus of upper management shifted. Health insurance plan is not great.

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You get paid every two weeks and benefits are OK, Medical is expensive for a family. I still believe in the product, NB and IFP's are where it is at!

    Cons

Sales are down but wait we will: Downsize the workforce Blame the ESM or TM when they(Management) reduce the reseller boots on the ground by 90% Let Epson sell NB as a loss leader to sell HW Use SFDC as an inventory tool but with no connection to Oracle User list? What user list? Backorders on product for weeks Constant Conference calls in the middle of the week Too many reports that could be pulled from SFDC Lack of understanding by upper management because they are never told the truth by middle management Middle management who needs to go out an actually sell a deal before they criticize you on your selling capabilities Training? NONE! Messaging? Just ask how many times they changed that with pricing around NB 2014 and then asked us to keep up with their stupidity. Jealous and deceitful RED's who will turn on you as fast as the wind changes directions

    Advice to Management

Fire certain middle managers and an upper executive who is ruining the company. If they can't present in NB or to an audience then you know who they are. Neil they are lying to you, dig deep and follow th money

I worked at SMART Technologies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

All my positive experience related to 'before' times when Nancy and David were the owners. Enjoyed working with immediate co-workers; a lot of room for growing.

    Cons

It used to be a stable company and joy to work for. Not anymore. Upper management doesn't care about people, they are not honest and can not be trusted. You never know what happens next.

    Advice to Management

I don't know guys how you survive with the approach you've taken. And honestly don't care anymore.

I worked at SMART Technologies for more than a year

    Pros

Some really talented people especially in Product Management and Customer Care and some great products and general vision. Very rewarding work with customers who generally like the products.

    Cons

Gap between upper management and middle management. Lack of real visibility into and understanding of the business issues. Execution and delivery issues still persistant on some key products. Constant change and restructurings make it difficult to build a stable workforce and solid image in the market. Big struggle to shift from legacy products and focus.
