    Pros

    People in general were hard working, nice, meant well. Office space.

    Cons

    Management often seemed to promote undeserved newer employees who hadn't really proven themselves. No real 401 K match, Great employee reviews sometimes equaled no raise???

    Technology, support and tools always available to do your job, no questions.

    Cons

    several decisions driven only by leading indicators, sometimes against common sense.
    being O&E company, it's strongly impacted by the market fluctuations

    Pros

    There are zero pros for Smith & Company in Conroe Texas

    Cons

    You go through a temp company. You are elgable for hire at the 90 day mark. Which does not happen. I've been working there for 7 months now. And I have not been hired on with the company. The reason why is they want too keep your pay way down. Everything that I have been told has not happened. And I do not have health insurance yet. Can't get the company benefits that are offered until hired on with the company. And I have a family that are having to do without. Do too the company poor decisions

    Advice to Management

    Stand behind what you tell people. And follow through with it. There are men that have families to support. And it is very difficult to do it on the wages that the company pays.

    Pros

    Smith has some great projects, some terrific co-workers, and a attractive office space. Most of the gap between culture / business expertise / approach that separates the Gatineau and Seattle offices has been resolved and reduced; it's no longer two distinct companies.

    Cons

    *There's an intense amount of scrutiny and micromanaging of every thought and action of the employees; and yet, a complete lack of transparency from upper management and little or no engagement with senior management. For most employees, SMITH's culture is one of perpetual fear due to years of consistent, frequent layoffs.

    Advice to Management

    Acknowledge the consistent feedback about the lack of transparency/engagement from senior management and try to right the ship.

    Pros

    Good co-workers with a culture of support and encouragement. Good benefits, but trying to take all that PTO is a challenge. Work life balance is good, if you make it so.

    Cons

    SMITH always seems to be on the edge. No sense of security with layoffs always hanging over us like a black cloud.

    Pros

    To their credit, SMITH has been able to hire (amazingly!) incredibly smart and talented people. No "mad men" type drama happening after hours in the stairwells.

    Cons

    Total lack of transparency from upper management. No one ever really knows what's *really* going on or the direction of the company.

    Advice to Management

    Just be honest. If things aren't going well, if there's going to be more layoffs (there are), just tell the truth. There's a wealth of talent in the city, but such a poor job has been done to try to "right the ship" that it might be too late.

    Pros

    Level 3 has great benefits for their employees. The structure of the company is well built and it is only going forward.

    Cons

    They have been continuously acquiring companies and they need to do a better job through this transition than from when they acquired global crossing.

    If you want a company that feels small that works big, SMITH is the place for you.

    If you want a company that feels small that works big, SMITH is the place for you. This has down sides but over all is a great place to work.
