"Junior Telecommunications Engineer in cabling at SNC Lavalin Telecom."

    StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Junior Telecommunications Engineer in Montreal, QC
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Convenient Downtown location with access to commuter metro lines. Good benefits. Some projects give you the opportunity to interact directly with customers.

    Cons

Not very wide range of telecommunications projects. Relative to the relations with upper management, should be in good graces of one of the directors to not be disregarded. The organization doesn't have manny resources that would make your work life easier: printers, computers, work equipement.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great team. Good flexibility in terms of working hours. More than adequate pay with great benefits.

    Cons

Being a very big company, going up the corporate ladder will take time. Less flexibility if on personnel loan (contract at client's site).

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits, RRSP plans Good travel work experience opportunities Very well respected company nationally and internationally

    Cons

A bit draconian in their managements systems Not very transparent in many things Wasn't uncommon to see cheaper option being taken without weighing in environmental cost of destruction

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work on large scale projects all over the world.

    Cons

Not structured to be friendly gor young engineers. No time or budget to be allowed to shadow senior engineers on work sites as your hours are billed the client you are working for. No room in budget for helping train junior engineers. Client gets no benefit from this. Everything is fine until there is no projects being won by the company. You are then basically forced into roles just to keep you off the overhead budget. Basically business model is not conducive to young or intermediate staff. Great for people with tons of experience who are in demand no matter what the economic outlook of the industry.

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great colleagues, diverse and interesting projects

    Cons

Silos between departments creates barriers for work tasks and limits career growth. Employee training and development not a priority. Very hierarchical structure, with limited opportunities for advancement.

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice exposure to engineering work in a multinational firm Great people, young teams Flexible hours and experienced management Great benefits (ESOP, RRSP, Insurance, etc.)

    Cons

Some projects can be very repetitive, boring with very little competition and intellectual stimulation for junior engineers Huge inertia: Unlike what HR and management advertise at first the mobility between departments and projects is very slow and not well regarded. You need to target the right department and position from the beginning.
