I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good, small, tight-knit teams with a very flexible work environment. Everyone is friendly and benefits are good. Downtown location with tunnel access is very convenient.

    Cons

Unable to stay competitive due to oil and gas sector being in a stagnation point. Clients are not spending money and SNC is having trouble staying competitive. Many internal integration issues with all of the acquisitions. Too many people with company history are quitting and leaving the younger engineers with no one to look up to or learn from.

    Advice to Management

Hire top business development staff and managers to help lead the company out of this slumping industry. Maintain good client relationships. Streamline integration between the various business units so the company runs more efficiently.

    I worked at SNC-Lavalin

    Pros

They use the Canadian system where you work from 8-6 M through TH and you do not go on fridays

    Cons

Instability and somewhat of overwhelming pressure because of company's past

"Good pay, good benefits-but poor management and no corporate direction"

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is competitive, benefits are better than average for E&C, and the discipline workers in the Oil & Gas division are mostly dedicated and well-qualified. As with all E&C's, when there's work, the office has a laid-back feel, when that changes-its tense. Work life balance mostly OK. Office has nice amenities. IT department is better than average for an E&C.

    Cons

Work flow is erratic, Business development is unfocused and hit-and miss. Some senior managers do not get along with each other and that negative relationship affects the smooth-running of the office. SNC-Lavalin Canada cannot decide if it wants to play with the "big dogs"-Fluor's and the Bechtel's, or just try to get the scraps of smaller projects from below average-to-average Houston clients. Once that is decided-the...

    Advice to Management

Listen to the grass roots, sit with the people who really do the work-don't just meet with peers-they will just tell you how wonderful you are. Treat all employees like people and try hard to get along with everyone, not just your "favorites". You have great potential-stop petty squabbling and focus on building up the business!

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good group of people and a good office culture in Saskatoon. Opportunity to grow in your career if you are a go-getter. High degree of staff technical proficiency and excellence.

    Cons

SNC is a large corporation and one can feel like a cog in the machine. If one is inclined to climb the management side of the corporate ladder, the executive is relatively young and executive positions do not have much turnover.

    Advice to Management

I think it is fair to say that many miss the small company feel of MDH. Small perks like being able to borrow a company truck to move some furniture are relatively inexpensive for the good will generated. Laying off people before Christmas is depressing. The accounting system is a chief source of irritation - local was better.

I worked at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

"Some" coworkers are very knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

Management is way too corrupt. Managers hire their friends and people of the same ethnicity. There is no fair hiring practices. Jobs were rarely advertised in the Calgary Oil and Gas office. Do not trust HR as they are in bed with senior management in the office. Manhours always go to manager's friends not to the people who can do the work. Some managers at the technical discipline level are incompetent and like...

I have been working at SNC-Lavalin full-time for more than 8 years

        Pros

Great city and culture. The team is great and very supportive. Give you a lot of responsibility.

        Cons

Very silo-ed and not very transparent on process for moving up the ladder. Basically if you're billable your not going anywhere.

        Advice to Management

Invest in the future. It seems many managers stall growth to protect their comfy jobs. Feels like what I think the canadian senate would be like...
