I worked at SPAR (UK) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nothing was positive about working here. Getting another job was the only thing that made it better. Don't ever work there.

    Cons

    No holiday pay
    Holidays denied
Boss didn't pay my national insurance
    Had to beg for wages
Some staff got to stand around doing nothing even when the delivery arrived at 8am in the morning.
Split shifts and always weekend working
Was only allowed holidays if I was going abroad
Some staff were on the payroll and others weren't

    Advice to Management

    Poor show

I worked at SPAR (UK) full-time

    Pros

I worked for a franchised store where the owners were heavily invested in the business.
    Friendly staff & customers
    Training provided
    Patient, approachable managers
    Decent contracts offered

    Cons

Constant working of weekend shifts - no fair distribution of weekend days off - this is a problem with retail/hospitality in general. Best to be upfront about not able to work weekends or you have something you need to do on certain days.

    Advice to Management

Have a fair rota that allows everyone some weekends off every month.

I worked at SPAR (UK) part-time

    Pros

The company is well managed and the shift patterns are clear and fair; i.e. one person doesn't end up working every weekend or evening shift. If there are shifts to be covered, the manager will post them in the office to be picked by the staff members so you can cover as many or as little as fits your schedule. There is a 10% discount on most items in store for staff, and the tea and coffee are free. If mistakes are made on till, the staff don't usually pay for it. The managers are kind and polite and work on the floor alongside the assistants and supervisors.

    Cons

Constantly working under scrutiny of cameras, staff and the public can cause anxiety; being the front of house can mean being the first to receive verbal or physical assault from customers, there are no chairs to sit on, so often spend nine or more hours on feet constantly. There should be a stool to elevate feet on to reduce swelling on long shifts. Because the till area cannot be left unsupervised, there can be long periods of boredom if all tasks are finished.

    Advice to Management

Please consider issuing stools to sit on, possibly fold away to reduce the amount of space they take up in small till areas.

I have been working at SPAR (UK) part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy job to do with virtually no challenges. There are some really nice people to work with that wish to work as a team. A lot of hours going due to lack of staff.

    Cons

Low on staff and if someone calls in sick they call you at the last minute or if you're already working they expect you to be willing to stay for the whole day. You aren't paid much, but when you consider what you have to do its not an unfair wage. Rota gets changed often and you don't get informed which leads to you being called early in the morning and being asked where you are.

    Advice to Management

Get more staff, don't change rotas so often and if you do please inform your employees and don't blame them when they aren't there for their shift when you change it on their day off for the following day.

I worked at SPAR (UK) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The job is lovely; it’s easy to get on with other members of staff. wonder customers with great support from management.

    Cons

Delivery times. If you haven't got a very big stockroom dry delivery can be highly annoying. Petrol delivery is another one as it always comes and can take up all the parking spaces annoying customers who then complain to you.

    Advice to Management

To be honest I think the management are really good. They handle their staff well, making sure they are happy in their work and they are great with customers.
