I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Incredible work-life balance. Every other friday off and management doesn't bat an eye if you need to take time off. You can work on interesting projects using new software/hardware/tools if you're with the right group (preferably smaller). The work can be dynamic and fun. People are great and easy to get along with. Doing something that is directly useful to sailors is rewarding.

    Cons

You can get stuck working with tools and processes that are antiquated. You can also get caught wrestling with issues produced by red-tape bureaucracy, which would not exist otherwise. Sometimes, certain tools are used simply because of government inertia. Government funding can be occasionally unpredictable.

    Advice to Management

Let your engineers/developers use tools and software that have never been used in government, if there is no reason not to other than it being 'new'.

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Great work-life balance and schedule (every other Friday off)
    - Pay is OK
    - Plenty of leaves (federal holidays, vacations, sick leaves)
    - Cool projects/technologies if you are lucky
    - No micromanagement, more freedom compared to outside (at least with my experience)
    - Job security
    - Location and weather

    Cons

    - Old technologies if you are not lucky to work with a certain project
    - Your project/team might not adopt the 'best practices'/methodologies/newest techniques or frameworks currently used outside
    - As a result, you might be the one responsible for your own professional development
    - Red tape: need approvals for many things (for example, new laptops/better monitors/software installed, etc.)
    - Pay is not as good as outside

    Pros

Food trucks visit every day. Great for your power point skills.

    Cons

Non technical leadership making technical decisions. No accountability, everybody is buying time until they retire and not enough people want to rock the boat. Your technical background will stagnate compared to your peers, command is more interest in saving money than to provide adequate tools in software... unless you do everything in power point. You get beaten into expecting less and less of your peers.

    Advice to Management

Pull more military with technical backgrounds. Stop "filling" bullets and start "fitting" them.

    Pros

job security and decent benefits (keep getting reduced and prices for health care keep increasing)

    Cons

Decision are made for political reasons instead of technical. Many project managers are useless and add no real value.

    Advice to Management

Let the engineers be engineers and reduce all the unnecessary bs

I have been working at SPAWAR Systems Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, every other Friday off, job stability, encourages higher education

    Cons

Politics, management, project funding, management, favoritism

To get things done, you'll need to jump through a few hoops. You'll have great ideas, but the red tape will kill them all. So if your a new engineering grad, this place will move at a much slower pace. Your ambitious attitude to learn will dwindle down to noting. If you are not careful, you will end up working years with no real skills gained.

    Advice to Management

Get involve with your projects. Don't just manage from behind a computer, come in and interact with your engineers. Also, keep looking for follow up work rather than leaving your group without any work or cool projects. COMMUNICATE!!

    Pros

    It is a Government job.

    Cons

Not a on the job training place. They have lots of technology, but no trainers. Employees lose interest and motivation at work.

    Advice to Management

They need to develop their current new staff instead of hiring people at higher paygrades, they could train internal employees.
