I have been working at SPAWAR full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great work-life balance and schedule (every other Friday off) - Pay is OK - Plenty of leaves (federal holidays, vacations, sick leaves) - Cool projects/technologies if you are lucky - No micromanagement, more freedom compared to outside (at least with my experience) - Job security - Location and weather

    Cons

    - Old technologies if you are not lucky to work with a certain project - Your project/team might not adopt the 'best practices'/methodologies/newest techniques or frameworks currently used outside - As a result, you might be the one responsible for your own professional development - Red tape: need approvals for many things (for example, new laptops/better monitors/software installed, etc.) - Pay is not as good as outside

I have been working at SPAWAR full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The best thing about working at SSC PAC or (now known as NAVWAR CENTER PACIFIC) is San Diego! Period. Besides the location, the work-life balance is great here. Benefits are decent and every other Friday is off. Most people are mellow and chill (while some are not).

    Cons

Come to this organization to work towards the end of your career when you don't have any aspirations left, not at the beginning. If you have spent 5+ years in this place, your skills will become non-applicable in the outside world. There are so much red tape, beurocracy, favoritism and politics in some codes. I wouldn't be surprised if some division/codes have actually systematic racism, sexism and any other form of discrimination. Snail pace progress in most big-budget projects and that is because the managers/supervisors/division heads/senior low caliber employees have a personal interest in the steak of those government. Fast progress means government becomes efficient and these people might not keep the contract. So to keep the money flow going some of them intentionally jeopardize their own project's progress.

    Pros

    * Good benefits * Great work/life balance * Interesting work (highly dependent on project)

    Cons

    * Once your salary is capped it's tough to stay motivated, you get paid the same as people who do nothing * Lot's of topped out employees with zero motivation * Technically adept employees get paid far less than they would in industry * Lots of Government red tape

I have been working at SPAWAR full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

SPAWAR Atlantic is a great place to work that provides the opportunity to grow professionally. The pay and benefits are comparable to industry if not better! Having the option to work a flex schedule works well medical appointments and family activities. Work life balance is emphasized from Senior Leadership. However, middle to lower level leadership aren't compliant with ensuring work life balanced is implemented.

    Cons

There yet remains a remnant of people who refuse to embrace a cultural change as it relates to allowing SPAWAR to be a viable entity in the workforce.
