I have been working at SPIE (Washington) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent pay, benefits, work life balance, special employee perks. Secure company that is making a positive difference in the world. Very gracious with employee training, development, tuition reimbursement programs and encouragement for changing positions within the company and joining cross company teams to keep people challenged and learning.

    Cons

Doesn't offer regular telecommuting or 4 10's due to collaborative in person work culture.

I worked at SPIE (Washington) full-time

    Pros

Outstanding benefits, including matching up to 5% for 403b (similar to 401k) retirement contributions via TIAA/CREF. Flexible hours, (too) relaxed culture, non-profit altruistic mission. Great location.

    Cons

A lot of time wasted in meetings and the non-profit structure and governance. Would be much more efficient if it were run like a for-profit. Many employees are too comfortable in their position because they know it is difficult to get fired. This results in a laissez faire culture that is frustrating to employees who are driven by achievement and hard work. And there's a bit of an old-boy network where the loudest get undue attention.

    Advice to Management

Too many ineffective "managers" who should not be managers or supervisors (the two are much confused at this org). Weak leadership of staff all the way up the chain. Weak mgrs/supervisors/directors are tolerated as elephants in the room. Too much attention cowing to board and committees idiosyncrasies year after year and not rational business goals.

Great place to intern! The staff is very nice and very flexible for an internship. It is typically 6 months so you can get some good experience.

    Cons

Part time good for students taking classes

I have been working at SPIE (Washington) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very positive work environment, with a sense of a common cause. There is very little office politics, reasonable pay, stellar benefits package. It seems that most staff have a deep sense of appreciation for this workplace. SPIE is non-profit, so the overarching goals of the organization are different compared to for-profit business. The campus is beautiful.

    Cons

It is difficult to move up in the organization, as people come and stay for many years.

    Pros

The company is big enough that resources are available to do interesting things. The company is small enough that one individual can still have a big impact.

SPIE has an well above average vacation and healthcare package. Everyone is friendly and people seem to really enjoy working together.

As a nonprofit, SPIE is working to make the world better.

    Cons

While the field is really interesting, there are not many other companies in the region doing similar work so the industry knowledge is not very transferable.

Opportunities for advancement are somewhat limited since managers seem to stay for a long time.

I worked at SPIE (Washington) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great atmosphere, lots of team work and an organization that makes a difference to its membership

    Cons

Little opportunity for advancement as there isn't much turn over and few higher level positions open. Can be a bit of the good old boys club.

    Advice to Management

Given their market and membership growth, I think they are doing a great job.

I have been working at SPIE (Washington) full-time

    Pros

Excellent benefits, many employee development opportunities. The organization has a good mission, which supports research in optics and photonics. Employment here allows opportunities to meet many interesting people.

    Cons

Traditional top-down organization, with bottlenecks at management positions. Few opportunities for advancement.
