I have been working at SPX full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting product. Essential infrastructure. Very large scale.

    Cons

The Company insists on treating a custom job shop as a run-of-the mill production line. Lack of coordination between Engineering, Manufacturing, and Management create a hostile push back atmosphere. Disposable Shop floor Supervision (with few exceptions,) has NO knowledge of the product and relevant production systems. Lack of engineering support, Lead Operators, and insufficient Quality Control staffing constantly roll issues forward; with very little future proofing.

    Advice to Management

More intermediaries are needed, stop squeezing pennies only to waste dollars.

I have been working at SPX full-time

    Pros

The people who work here want to have success, and contribute positively to the companies growth.

    Cons

Too many changes in management, with unfocused goals.

    Advice to Management

Ease up on the management and organizational changes. Give us a chance to breathe, and let's focus on getting the work done. There have been a lot of structural and organizational shifts over the last two years, and the company goals have become muddied. Clear focus, with an opportunity to actually complete some long term projects successfully without midstream changes would go a long way toward improving morale. A win is a necessity!

    Pros

It's such a train wreck that there honestly is opportunity for you to do a lot on your own and gain experience that YOU seek out.

    Cons

Has the stereotypical babyboomer-millenial age gap where there is almost no body between the ages of 28 and 45. The older folks are nice, but too pigeon-holed to leave and are just hanging on for retirement. Advancement within this site is dull and not attractive. Awful benefits for salaried employees. NO sick-days. Just "let your boss know."

    Advice to Management

CHANGE. Management is so stuck in their ways and have the mantra "this is how it's always been done" practically tattooed on their foreheads.

I have been working at SPX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The salary is good. A lot of opportunity for overtime and extra cash. The benefits are ok.

    Cons

Long hours. The company forces to work a LOT of hours, including weekends. Could not see my family for weeks. Management is not looking for improvements, just looking for who to blame.

    Advice to Management

Cooperate better with employees. Don't think that employees are looking only for ways to rip off the company.

    Pros

Fortune 500 company but with many business segments; investment in some segments is badly needed and SPX could easily be part of a personal law suit if it continues to operate without direction from the corporate office

    Cons

As a fortune 500 company it has many business segments; investment in some segments is badly needed and SPX could easily be part of a personal law suit if it continues to operate without direction from the corporate office

    Advice to Management

Beware of high turn-over in certain business segments

    Pros

The money was good. Other than that, not much good. The management team, from the senior level down was very short sighted regarding profits. Their philosophy was to raid the future to make the present look as good as possible. They strategy was to reduce the asset base to the point where return on assets was incredible. In doing so, there would be an asset base in place to support the future. Although, their philosophy was that the future was something to worry about tomorrow.

I will say that there was some talent in the company. Although, it was churned through fairly quickly.

    Cons

See above. The short sighted view held by the management team. They would never focus on the future, just on the current quarter, Their belief seemed to be that employees were as disposable as operational supplies. The management team seemed to have somewhat of a Jack Welch complex. No matter what level the expenses were at, the belief was that you had to take cost out. At a certain point, I started to think that the best thing that they could do was to take 100% of the cost out of the system and everyone should go home. I think everyone would have been better off.

    Advice to Management

Think beyond today. The sun will come up tomorrow.

    Pros

If you have a task what you like to do, and have the needed resources you could be productive.

    Cons

No career opportunities. You have to do what you've hired a decade ago. No other roles.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your Employee, they work for you. Otherwise if they get a better offer, they leave.
