I worked at SPX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

SPX formerly Yuba was a great shop with excellent staff. The technology and quality of products used to be some of the best in the industry.

    Cons

Due to reduction in force, they are running on a skeleton crew. The shop staff was impacted very heavily. Too many cuts. If or when things come back, they won't have enough staff.

    Advice to Management

Best of luck. It was unfortunate that the shop has been cut back so much.

I worked at SPX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Was a good company before the oil industry took a dump.

    Cons

Now they only have less than 50 employees out of 150.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the employees you have left.

I worked at SPX full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ok pay and benefits was able to get time off when needed.

    Cons

A lot of older employees that have been there a long time and refuse to change with the times. They all have the "well this is the way it's always been done". Management has no idea what they are doing.

    Advice to Management

Communicate better with employees, learn to better manage and stop playing the blame game.

I worked at SPX full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Good pay. Nice people to work with. No concerns about the union environment.

    Cons

Toxic culture. Leadership lives in a bubble. Erratic strategic direction from corporate. Poor timing and execution on huge expansion to get into large power. Left the company with excess capacity and poor profits. Very unstable. Chaotic. Not a fun place to work.

    Advice to Management

Treat people like you actually trust them. Stop the lip service and platitudes and just tell the truth. We are not children, stop treating us like this.

    Pros

I really enjoyed working at SPX with all the different people, respect for employees, opportunities for growth, and overall professionalism of the company.

    Cons

Continued corporate restructuring, realignment, and changing strategy took its toll on everyone just trying to do his/her job to the best that could be done.

I have been working at SPX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The salary is good. A lot of opportunity for overtime and extra cash. The benefits are ok.

    Cons

Long hours. The company forces to work a LOT of hours, including weekends. Could not see my family for weeks. Management is not looking for improvements, just looking for who to blame.

    Advice to Management

Cooperate better with employees. Don't think that employees are looking only for ways to rip off the company.

    Pros

Fortune 500 company but with many business segments; investment in some segments is badly needed and SPX could easily be part of a personal law suit if it continues to operate without direction from the corporate office

    Cons

As a fortune 500 company it has many business segments; investment in some segments is badly needed and SPX could easily be part of a personal law suit if it continues to operate without direction from the corporate office

    Advice to Management

Beware of high turn-over in certain business segments

    Pros

The tasks and opportunites that I did receive were great. Generally the coworkers (and some of management) were very helpful and supportive. Safety was becoming a big consideration in decisions.

    Cons

It was always a fight to expand my own abilities.
Accountablity was not usually a part of the work envirnoment nor was there a level playing field.

    Advice to Management

Pick a path and stick to it. Do not say you want something then do nothing to support it.

    Pros

The money was good. Other than that, not much good. The management team, from the senior level down was very short sighted regarding profits. Their philosophy was to raid the future to make the present look as good as possible. They strategy was to reduce the asset base to the point where return on assets was incredible. In doing so, there would be an asset base in place to support the future. Although, their philosophy was that the future was something to worry about tomorrow.

I will say that there was some talent in the company. Although, it was churned through fairly quickly.

    Cons

See above. The short sighted view held by the management team. They would never focus on the future, just on the current quarter, Their belief seemed to be that employees were as disposable as operational supplies. The management team seemed to have somewhat of a Jack Welch complex. No matter what level the expenses were at, the belief was that you had to take cost out. At a certain point, I started to think that the best thing that they could do was to take 100% of the cost out of the system and everyone should go home. I think everyone would have been better off.

    Advice to Management

Think beyond today. The sun will come up tomorrow.
