I have been working at SSAB full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Excellent working conditions in Lisle.
    Superior benefits and competitive salary.
True work/life balance. Overtime for salaried workers is rare.
    Congenial coworkers.
I thought I'd clarify that they no longer use Groupwise and Novell. Transitioned to Outlook 2 years ago and no longer use Novell.
    Profit sharing.
Top notch management and executive team in SSAB Americas. I've learned a lot from interacting with them.
Quarterly employee meetings to explain financial results are very helpful.

    Cons

Staffed fairly lean but management invests wisely in technology.
Market for steel plate and coil (SSAB's product) is improving but not quite up there with fabricated steel and tube products. The economy is slowly improving.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to let some of the managers give part of the quarterly presentation instead of the same people. I would also like more training for manager/directors.

I have been working at SSAB full-time

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits. Great working environment. Friendly department peer group. I've had an overall pleasant experience in the 15 plus years I've worked for the company.

    Cons

The only con I could possibly think of would be the cyclic nature of the steel industry. There are periods when the supply outstrips the demand but our company has weathered those storms without layoffs in each instance.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep the lines of communications open and use the knowledge of those in the trenches to fulfill the goal of continuous improvement.

I have been working at SSAB full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This Company pays well and has better than average benefits.

    Cons

The hours and working conditions are not for everyone, but are better than the average Steel Mill.

    Advice to Management

Unless you are in the management 'click', moving up in this company is very hard.

I worked at SSAB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Overall good experience with the job

    Cons

    Sometimes butt heads with managers

    Advice to Management

Management should treat your employees better and as assets.

Former Employee - Safety & Environmental Assistant in Stockholm, Jämtland (Sweden)

I worked at SSAB (Less than a year)

    Pros

Liked the people I worked with, very helpful since I was new to the company. In that position I had the opportunity to learn new things that I think will be beneficial for me.

    Cons

I believe lack of communication and the time frame in completing your every day task with other assignments are a little unrealistic at times.

  10. "Its had its ups and downs"

    Star Star Star Star Star
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Money is ok , but considering all they expect from one person, it's not worth it. Upper management only cares about the bottom line, they do not care how you do it, just get it done.

    Cons

Favoritism at this company is unbelievable, the rules only apply when it's convenient for them. They choose to look the other way, for most. A lot of upper management have relatives that work for them.

    Advice to Management

They see what they choose to see. They preach safety, but truly it's just production that matters. They put people in positions, and these people use these positions to abuse their authority.

    Pros

    Salary and Benifits are fantastic

    Cons

No Growth Policy. Meaning where your hired in as is where you stay any new positions are given to people off the street

    Advice to Management

Let us move around and grow within the company
