I have been working at SSE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities are available for the correct people. Promotes a positive safety culture. Lead well by CEO so relatively stable place for employment.

    Cons

Can be quite archaic at times as most of the senior managers are long term and stuck to the way they know.

    Advice to Management

If we focussed on quality as much as safety, we would eradicate the safety issues at source. Also, listen to new ideas

I have been working at SSE full-time

    Pros

Large company with opportunities for those who excel to self develop and move through the rankings. Good initial incentives for apprentices and trainees

    Cons

Variety of knowledge across workforce between individuals, although this is the case a drive is in place to educate all employees to their roles

    Advice to Management

Constant observation of employees progress as an individual would help to set them up a positive drive to the work force to continually strive for personal improvement

There is someone who sneezes a lot

    Advice to Management

    Treat everyone the same.

    Pros

Great added benefits: share save options, discounts, job security, pension.
Varied and diverse business so can change career path within organisation.
    Strong and meaningful values.

    Cons

Opportunity often dependent on who your manager is.
Not always the highest base salary, but added benefits make total package worthwhile.

    Advice to Management

Have a recognition of Reading being a costly place to live (currently only a London allowance).

I have been working at SSE (More than a year)

    Pros

    Thorough training
Good starting salary with the opportunity for a pay rise each year
Opportunities to move up the business
Fairly flexible with shift changes to fit around your life as long as they are reasonable
If you're struggling with something they support you in trying to resolve this

    Cons

Sometimes management can be too concerned with stats
The length of time you can wait calling through to other departments for the customer
I've never had to phone in sick but I've heard from colleagues that they will try to convince you to come in to work anyway even if you're being sick etc.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you're available for you team on shift to ask questions
Apart from that no real advice as they seem to do a good job overall

I have been working at SSE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very helpful easy to talk to management.
    Progressions fast

    Cons

1 break a day can get tried if long day

    Advice to Management

Keep up good work. And listening to staff love it

    Pros

Good benefits and access to services. New building being built has allowed for more services to be available for example a new gym is available. Also many new opportunities are available through the in house careers page.

    Cons

Very focused on individual stats even during busy periods. Can sometimes make your focus split between wanting to help customers and wanting to please your manager.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with the people on the front line as to what is going to be implemented before just dropping it

    Pros

    - excellent pay considering you dont need qualifications
    - loads of full paid training
    - progression is genuinely accessible, they are such huge employers that there is constantly room to progress
    - really fun and positive office environment, parties & team buffets etc.
    - great rewards/ benefits for staff

    Cons

    - excessively strict with sickness. I am not one to pull a sicky. I was off sick twice, firstly for emercency dental surgery and second time a kidney infection which included bleeding from places that will not be disclosed! When I came back to work after the second occassion, the Customer Service Manager for my zone informed me curtly that my probation had been extended for an extra 3 months. No circumstance of sickness is an exception, you could have been in a car crash that killed your parents and they would want you in for a disciplinary where you would most likely be fired on the spot. If you think I'm exaggerating... just try it!
    - only other negatives is that you will get fat from all the treats... oh and the cafeteria staff are rude, bitter women. Just a little warning!

    Advice to Management

No one wants to work for someone that shows so little consideration for their employees health. Instead of being THIS level of uptight about sickness, ease up and just dont give sick pay for days off. Barely any other companies do it.
