      Great WLB, poor employee retention

      Dec 11, 2021 - Software Developer
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

WLB: managers here care about your mental health, and they make sure you enjoy your work. People don't usually burn out / work overtime. Culture: Very inclusive. You get to work with people with different backgrounds, and there are many social events within the company/teams. Compensation: compensation is OK among med cap Canadian tech companies. However, get ready to be down-leveled/lowballed if you are an external hire. Tech stack: opportunities to learn and apply modern technologies/frameworks to your work.

      Cons

High turnover rate: One thing you'll notice after working a while here is that people come and go very often. I've seen many talented employees leave the company in 2021, though the tech department had a massive growth in early 2021. The average tenure of a developer at SSENSE is ~ 2years, which indicates that there's some serious problem with retention. Career growth: this depends on teams. If you happen to land in a high-impact team, congrats, you'd have a better chance to be promoted quicker than others. But if you find you haven't published a meaningful PR for a while or doing small/repetitive work, you should think about transfer teams or vote with your feet. Stay in your comfort zone can be tempting, but career growth is all that matters, especially if you are in an early career. Level system: The leveling in the tech department is weird. Many SD1s are doing the same work as SD2s, and many strong SD3s are doing the same job as seniors. If you work with different people, you'll realize there seems to be a massive gap between SD2 and SD3. Also, the recruiter will likely lowball you if you are an external hire because they don't even understand their own level system. Make sure not to be lowballed and know your worth! Hiring bar: Expect the people you work with to have a highly fluctuating skill level. Since I believe there is something wrong with the leveling, you'll find yourself working with highly talented people, and also some people who do not align with their level.

Incompetent leadership surrounding the three brothers

      Mar 10, 2020 - Manager

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Good office space that is clean and offers coffee/tea/fruits. The company is also growing at a decent rate which is always good for growth. You get the feeling that the owners (three brothers) want to take the company in the right direction but dont know how to.

      Cons

Really poor quality of leadership at Director and above level. Whenever they try to hire good talent, they end up losing them within 12-18 months because they get frustrated with rigid, hierarchical decision making structure. The brothers did a great job growing the company to this level but they are now found out - they dont know how to manage a company of this size. That is where they rely on VP and director level layer and that is where they get misled so frequently. These Directors and VPs (one or two left after massive turnover in 2019) have vested interest and couldn't care less about the long term health of the company. This leads to poor compensation structure for employees, poor performance and accountability, poor vision and strategy for long term, etc. Don't be fooled by the initial pitch in the interview stage. If you work for a well established company, I would highly discourage you from joining SSENSE. They are unorganized, lack quality leadership in key positions, very short-term in customer facing activities (make quick bucks now - forget about the next 5 years), and extremely political in peer to peer relationships. You will not learn any executive skills and will be struggling against the best once you do decide to leave SSENSE. All these positive reviews are from 20 somethings, newbiees in the corporate world who don't even have a good point of reference to compare to. This is a decent company if this will be your first job - but don't over stay. Aggressively negotiate your comp upfront because their own performance review process is awful and they dont mind cheaping out on paying full bonuses.

      Pros

It is inspiring to work for a company who has a unique point of view and has achieved so much success in the past few years. The work environment is very dynamic and the entrepreneurial spirit still remains. You are given free reign no matter what your level.

      Cons

Company is growing at a rapid rate and with that comes a lot of growing pains and a heavy workload.

Great for engineers, lots to learn

      Aug 29, 2021 - Senior Software Engineer

      Pros

      - The tech stacks are quite attractive for developers and since they grow very fast, we always try to find an opportunity to improve performance and scalability and you could learn from it. - Cross-domain knowledge sharing is pretty good, mostly through SSENSE tech Medium articles and SSENSE University. - Even though they are very very busy with crazy growth, they never sacrifice the quality of software which I am very happy with. - Some may find that they are being micro-managed, I personally find that there is less gap between reality vs. what managers are reported, which is great for operation. I worked at a place where managers were so far from reality that there was no improvements were made, or any changes they were making were so irrelevant to what we actually needed. So, I find this positive so far. - Smart co-workers who you could learn from. - Safe environment where employees could use vacations/PTO and etc. - Great onboarding experience (I got most of my accesses within 3 days for the most part, and there are accesses for squad specific which is processed quickly once requested)

      Cons

      - Lots of turnover, but I think there are lots of turnover at every company at the moment. - Tight deadline but they don't ask employees to sacrifice their personal life to meet the goal. Very mature individuals working in the company.
