I worked at STERIS full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

flexible schedule, make your own weekly and monthly schedule. work out of your home, pay is really good. good vacation time. form relationships with your customers and attend there needs and meet all kinds of interesting people

    Cons

the balance between work and family is off. lots of overtime due to manpower shortages. long lead time to getting someone new hired.

    Advice to Management

not everything in work life is or can be measured by metrics. nice guide line but should not be the be all end all

I have been working at STERIS full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great benefits. Company is steadily improving. Growth potential. Opportunity to move around in the company.

    Cons

Not really a con, but just try not to get into any incidents, or cause the company a lot of time and money. You have a lot of responsibilities as a Field Service Representative.

    Advice to Management

There is a lot of paper work. I'm extremely new, so that could be why it's overwhelming to me possibly.

I worked at STERIS full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I had a Great District Manager when i resigned and many positive professional relationships with my customers

    Cons

Culture evolved to a poor work vs family time environment, for many in the field. The volume of work in relation to the healthcare industry and the safety concerns of that environment can be overwhelming.

    Advice to Management

Increase starting pay to attract capable field techs

I worked at STERIS full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent pay and insurance benefits. Company provided vehicle. Tools were supplied. Adequate initial and continuing training was provided. Great engineering phone support for techs in the field.

    Cons

Too few techs for area. Long hours often necessary but OT was discouraged (draw your own conclusions). Advancement opportunities bottle neck at DSM level. Too much contract retention was being shifted from sales to service.

    Advice to Management

Try harder to retain good techs. HR should pay more attention to large numbers of techs quitting in a district in a short time. 20+ year employees don't quit when the DSM is doing his job well.

I have been working at STERIS full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good field to work in, great customer base, good job in spite of company, several decent perks, pay is adequate, plenty of time off available in theory

    Cons

Ever-increasing stress primarily comes from company, not from job/customers, company constantly at cross purposes with actual job, constant bad decisions made by bean counters or other non-field workers, continually more irrelevant additional requirements given even though job itself has always been the same, never-ending grief from all levels of management and/or general bureaucracy for a myriad of perceived... compliance failures, time off very difficult to actually take without hoops to jump through and major stress, understaffed, ever-changing and usually contradictory goals/rules/priorities

    Advice to Management

SIMPLIFY, back off, provide real incentives, find out what job actually is in the field, be realistic, get out of bed with the government, and make products that sales and techs can be proud to present and service.

I have been working at STERIS full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company treats it's employees well. The benefits are dirt cheap and good, the car perks are great for field service, the 401K matching is very good compared to anywhere else, there is a great measure of autonomy in the job, little micromanaging, focus on safety.

    Cons

The pay blows, although its half made up for in benefits, etc, the pay REALLY blows. Work life balance is hard to achieve at times, leadership is lost, product quality isn't what it used to be, metrics are killing the service workforce.

    Advice to Management

Focus on buying companies and corporate direction is fine, although likely overrated in terms of actual shareholder value. If there is any focus on the service team at all, it is sorely inadequate or misguided. Pay scale forces the good people out and will never attract any top talent. Metrics tied to bonuses lead to unethical decisions across the workforce, number manipulation is rampant and will end up with FDA... violations or worse. New hire training (service) is broken, not from a product standpoint, but from a procedure perspective. No one knows what to do. Siebel is an disaster. Customer focused decisions will make for good service, if you try to tailor the service business to your needs (surgical division) and ignore massive decline in customer service that accompanies the choices by looking at metrics (fake data), eventually the customers will go elsewhere... By the time it effects the sales numbers it will be to late and STERIS' reputation will already be tarnished.
